“TGAGWCAGA 2024” is an awards show that should win an award for the most unique acronym for a gaming event, even if it’s a tough one to remember accurately. But the tongue-in-cheek idea behind it is much easier to remember. Hosted in mid-December, the The Game Awards for Games Who Can’t Afford the Game Awards (TGAGWCAGA) 2024 was offered up as an alternative to the glitzy The Game Awards (TGA) production that celebrates mostly AAA games and high-profile indie games.
The TGAGWCAGA 2024 dished up both a showcase and an awards show, covering 2024 indie game releases, hidden gems, released demos, most innovative titles, upcoming games, self-published titles — and bookended by a deliberately simple opening and closing. But as the video descriptions says, “No big-budget theatrics or celebrity cameos—just pure indie grit”, this video and show delivered in spades. If you’re into indie games, there’s likely something new and undiscovered that may fit what you want to try out.

While this event was apparently planned within a two week window as an alternative to the TGA, it won’t be the last event the organizers, Joystick Ventures, produces: They recently announced the SUGOI Showcase in late March, which focuses on newer talent in the indie games space. Plus, of course, there’s always a chance TGAGWCAGA may return with a 2025 edition later in the year.
