With Snow Crash author Neal Stephenson announced as a speaker at the upcoming Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2023 conference, this seemed like the right occasion to take a look back at another recent occasion where the influential science fiction writer and metaverse blockchain co-founder had spoken.
At the D.I.C.E. Summit this last February, Neal Stephenson was the opening keynote. In the 20 minute-long video, Stephenson discusses the socially consciousness and technological underpinnings behind Lamina1, the metaverse-focused blockchain network he’s helping to build.
In the video, he also acknowledges the wariness of some game developers to the “financialization” of games through blockchain, Web3, NFT and some of the other issues shaping perception in and around the volatile crypto world. But, because of the success of many games, like World of Warcraft and EVE Online (with their in-game currencies and economies) Stephenson is fundamentally bullish on game currencies that have meaningful value — a concept that he believes that can translate to the metaverse.
