Oculus to Create New VR Conference

This sure looks like a watershed year for Internet of Things, augmented reality, and virtual reality conferences. Silicon Virtual Reality Conference, Augmented World Expo, NeuroGamin Conference and Expo, GLAZEDCon and many, many others are nascent events in their first or second year.

But these new events reflect a recent surge of interest in these fields, which can in many cases be defined as wearable tech with a slew of new products in wearable health, virtual reality, augmented reality and many other new products ultimately aimed for the consumer, notably the gaming consumer too. One helpful way to visualize this growth is the Wearable World infographic that encompasses much of the wearable technology space, and its future growth.

While the ink is still drying on the relatively new conferences and expos, one of the major brands is throwing its hat — or rather, its headset — into the ring with a new event of its own.

Oculus VR, on its company blog today, announced their plans to kick off a new virtual reality conference, Oculus Connect. With the recent news of over 100,000 sales of Oculus development kits, there’s a large enough community to consolidate interest in an Oculus-centric conference.

Oculus Connect will be hosted at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles on September 19-20th. Confirmed keynotes include Oculus leaders, such as Brendan Iribe, CEO; Palmer Luckey, Founder; John Carmack, CTO; and Chief Scientist, Michael Abrash on developments in the growing developments in the world of Oculus.

The opportunity to attend starts on July 10th, and attendee confirmations will be issued next week. Given the details on the Oculus blog and official conference site about the conference’s focus, it might not be too early to expect this event to live up to a possible billing as a limited-attendance developer-centric conference–perhaps in the same tradition as Google I/O and Apple’s WWDC. However, in the same spirit as the latter two events, livestreaming of Oculus Connect will be available to developers around the world.

Details on the official site outline a few bird’s-eye level details about the conference, but expect to see more info once the chance to apply to register pops up on July 10th. Follow E4G, we’ll keep you posted!
