The organizers of theĀ Game Developers Conference (GDC), Informa, issued a supplementary report with fresh insights about generative AI usage by game developers. The responses are derived from the 2024 State of the Game Industry Survey. The results of the 2025 State of the Game Industry survey will be revealed next year at some point, and those sentiments may or may not correlate with the findings from next year’s survey.
Among some of the highlights from this report are pros and cons related to the usage of GenAI. And, given the potential for GenAI to take root in game development, there’s a lot of perspectives on how GenAI should be used, in what ways, and with which restrictions.
For example, overall, over 30% of developers say they’re already using these tools in their work, with a further segment of developers interested in bringing them into their tool and platform portfolio. Regionally, East Asian developers appear to be more receptive than North American developers to using GenAI (70% vs. 42%). GenAI can serve a lot of roles in a studio, from writing drafts, to editing them, to developing procedurally generated levels, and much more. However, most developers would prefer to see AI used as an assistive tool for creatives, presumably not empowered to take over entire roles or teams.
