AnDevCon Boston 2015 Early Bird Registration to Close Soon

0

Boston area, New England and East Coast-based Android developers are scheduled to get some technical conference love this year. That’s well and good for many, no doubt — but there’s always that fence-sitting whether to go or not to go. There are arguably rewards for committing early. Case in point:

BZ Media, the organizers of AnDevCon, have sent a reminder that early bird registration for the 9th AnDevCon event is about to come to a close. The conference pass registration rate, which is currently at $995, jumps $500 to $1,495 after January 16th. The AnDevCon conference pass gives attendees access to over 70 tutorials and classes, above and beyond the expo hall experience.

AnDevCon is a technically focused series of conferences for Android developers, with networking opportunities for both developers and business-minded folks — with some content and exhibitors targeted to the gaming business and development community — in the midst of Boston.

Dell has been really busy at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year. They showed off a variety of products, including laptops, monitors, and a new tablet. Starting off the lineup is two addictions to the XPS’s line, the XPS 13 and 15. The XPS 13 has a bezel display and a 15 hour battery life. Dell proclaims that the XPS 13 is the smallest laptop, weighting 2.6 pounds.

The XPS 15 has an impressive 4K Ultra HD touch display; with more than 8 million pixels, this laptop looks to be the most gorgeous laptop on the market. Dell’s newest tablet is the Dell Venue 8 7000. Why Mobile Gaming is a Serious Business Worth Playing

A few years ago, you’d have been laughed out of a gamer’s living room for suggesting mobile devices might ever rival home consoles. Fast forward to 2014, and the rate of smartphone/tablet adoption (one of the fastest in tech history) has catapulted gaming into a whole new dimension of portable fun possibilities.

Today, 1 in every 5 people on the planet carries a smartphone in their pocket; and 1 in 17 sports a tablet, reported BI Intelligence. It doesn’t take Einstein to recognize the potential such scale and reach holds for the business of ‘on the go’ fun. In America alone, 152 million people already play mobile games, of which 66 million pay to play them, Newzoo revealed. And recent trends suggest those numbers are set to soar. According to Nielsen, the average time US smartphone owners (18 and over) spend per month on video, audio and gaming apps has hiked a hefty 71% since just 2012, to 10 hours 34 minutes per month.

As mobile devices continue to grow, the mobile game category will only follow suit for its take-anywhere entertainment factor. Newzoo calculates that by 2017, the global games market will surpass $100 billion, of which smartphone and tablet games will seize 34% of market share. At $34 billion, that’s an almighty piece of the gaming pie, and a hefty prize pool up for grabs.

The stats highlight big windows of opportunity for game creators to flourish, but in an increasingly crowded space, with sky’s the limit scope to evolve, come even bigger questions and challenges to confront. Chiefly, how do you build a premium experience that cuts through gaming noise and taps emerging markets without getting lost?

“The challenge with mobile games is that even as it grows it remains very fragmented and overcrowded,” said DFC analyst, Jeremy Miller. “Companies need to be very cautious about their platform strategy and understand which markets and platforms are suitable for their particular product.”

For gaming companies, the level of competition in every aspect of business has never been greater (nor the reward of success more lucrative), but the fact remains: making games is hard. Making successful games is damn hard. So how do we, as an industry, elevate mobile to the next gaming level?

There’s no hard and fast formula for success… but there is a very important discussion that’s about to unfold around these questions, and the blinding bright future of gaming. An all-star industry lineup of movers, shakers, experts and visionaries has been assembled to confront game developers and business brains with the serious topics that drive serious industry growth. Unleashing the true power of mobile gaming commands a team effort. Let’s get the conversation started.

Hear Mikko Setala (Rovio), Christian Calderon (Dots) and other pioneers talk about the future of mobile gaming at the annual GameDevHacker Conference in New York City January 28th, 2015.

International CES Partners with Radius Networks on First Wide Scale Indoor BLE Navigation System (PR)

0

One feature larger conventions and expos have long needed is a feature of modern life most of us take for granted. GPS, or rather, navigation that have simplified once meandering trips to White Castle and Best Buy into precise Point A to B missions.

But, what if you are at a convention or expo filled with hundreds of thousands of square feet and hordes of attendees, and are trying to pinpoint exactly where you need to go next, and how to get there? The International CES show this year, with over 2 million total square feet (equal to 25 football fields) of expo and conference session space, is one of the first conferences to tackle that problem with a combination of mobile technologies, as the press release below details:

“Las Vegas, NV – 01/05/2015 – The International CES® and Radius Networks announced today that the 2015 CES will feature a new navigation system for attendees, powered by Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons.  The navigation system, accessible through the CES app, will provide attendees with directions to exhibit locations within CES Tech West and Tech East. In total, the navigation system covers an estimated four million square feet of space.  Produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, the 2015 International CES, the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies, runs January 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“CES is all about innovation and leveraging next-generation technologies,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, International CES and corporate business strategy, CEA. “We are excited to partner with Radius Networks to implement this new BLE-powered navigation system. This new service supports our goal to continuously provide our attendees with new tools to enhance their show experience.”

Through the CES app, users can select a CES destination, such as an exhibitor booth. The app will then show directions from the current position using the BLE beacons placed throughout the show floor.

“We are excited to deploy our new indoor location technologies on such a massive scale,” said Marc Wallace, CEO and co-founder, Radius Networks. “Radius Networks previously partnered with CES to implement an award-winning scavenger hunt program at the 2014 CES that was designed to drive attendees to key areas of the show floor.  Since then, proximity technology and the Internet of Things have taken off.  This year, we are excited to demonstrate how easy-to-deploy, low-cost beacons can completely change the way people approach indoor location.”

Radius Networks, a CEA member company, will also be hosting a beacon technology meet-up and demonstrating additional innovative uses for BLE beacons during the 2015 CES on Tuesday, January 6, from 5:30PM-7:30PM in Room N 256 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall, in CES Tech East.”

Now, what are the chances this incredibly useful feature might turn up someday at another major show that could use it, like PAX or Comic-Con?

Narvalous Holiday Party Post-Mortem

Events for Gamers usually takes a look at larger events through the spectrum of the game industry, both in and around it. But, what about the role of seasonal parties and other smaller, more ecosystem and company-focused events? We zero in on one company, multi-platform game developer and publisher, Narvalous, through the eyes of their CEO and Co-Founder, Toni Xu, who was willing to take a look at the role of their holiday event and what they did to make the most of it.

Events for Gamers: Toni, thanks for taking time to conduct an interview with Events for Gamers! Tell us about Narvalous, what role your company takes in the game industry, as a starting point

Toni Xu: Hi, thanks for having me for the interview!

Narvalous is currently focused on bringing AAA-class to gamers and provide the best gaming experience online and on mobile.  Our ultimate goal is to complete building a game platform that can facilitates more developers to reach more audience and achieve their goals, and provide gamers with one-stop community for best game play experience, gaming discovery and rating, and player communications.

E4G: As a growing company, you hosted an event recently, a holiday game reception and showcase. Tell us about this event, what you hoped to accomplish and if you felt you did accomplish what you set out to do with it.

Toni:  One reason we decided to host such an event at last minute was to honor our guests from Gamewave, from Beijing, China to sign the game publishing license of Chrono Wars.  This is the #1 selling browser game in China with most advanced 3D browser engine.  The event has achieved our goals of announcing and demo our latest game: Chrono Wars to the US market.  We had a good turnout with key guests, considering it was a short-notice in a holiday season.

E4G: What did you learn about Narvalous as a company, and the community interested in it and your games, by hosting this holiday event?

Toni:  As a game publisher, we are fortunate to be located in the heart of Silicon Valley, with access to vital resources to the success of a game publisher company.  By hosting a holiday event, we got to gather at the end of year and beginning of another year, a good time for planning future company growth and partnership opportunities.  To be specific, we celebrated signing of Chrono Wars, and signing up the Diablo II producer Matt Householder’s new company as our partner in the game publishing business.  We also started discussion with potential partners in game channeling (Netherfire), marketing (SNK and BoomInsiders), big-data analysis (Datavisor), and connected with our investor and other partners and friends.

E4G:
Is there anything you might have done differently in creating and carrying out the event?

Toni:  Plan much earlier in advance!

E4G: Overall, what are your plans for Narvalous in 2015? What role do you expect events will have with your company during the year alongside these objectives?

Toni:  Make a couple successful games online and mobile, and have our platform (xGamePlatform) recognized as the best game platform in US.  We hope to leverage events as opportunities to build our brand and network with friends.

Thank you, Toni and Narvalous, for sharing your insights about leveraging a holiday event for creating opportunities down the road.

At the conference venue, developers will have a chance to employ the inspiration gathered from the talks and expos in the second part of the conference, by participating in the Austria Game Jam. Here, participants will have the opportunity to create game prototypes within 48 hours, making it another great opportunity for collaboration and networking in a creative environment. Austria Game Jam will be accompanied by the Retro Games Expo by GameStage, where games from the last 30 years can be played live on-site.

“When we created the concept for the CEGC, we had a vision of a Central European games industry that receives the attention it deserves”, explains Mariebeth Aquino. “Since then, the initiative has expanded into a group of more than 30 well-connected volunteers distributed all over Central and Eastern Europe. CEGC’s main objective is to increase the perception of the Central European games industry and open up new opportunities in Eastern Europe. For this purpose, CEGC has managed to secure European-wide support, e.g. by the Creative Europe Desks, the European Game Developers Federation (EGDF), the Austrian Association for Entertainment Software (ÖVUS) and the Austrian Computer Society (OCG)”.

Ticket sale has started on Saturday, December 20, 2014 A schedule of the conference can be found at: www.cegconf.com For more information, contact partner@cegconf.com
