Games for Health Day, also featuring Games for Health University, will take place at the seventh annual summit, the premier international conference and expo, exploring how mobile, telehealth and connected health are impacting health care delivery, clinical care management and patient/consumer engagement.  Games for Health will take a careful look at the design of serious health-related games, including the inherent strengths of games — learning, motivation and persuasion — as well as ethical considerations, elements of the player experience, paper prototyping methods and playtesting.

“This full day pre-summit event is designed to address issues facing gaming technology designers and producers, healthcare providers, pharmacy organizations and policymakers, as well as the needs and real-world use of games and gaming technologies among consumers,” said Beth Bryant, president of the Games for Health Project. “Our interactive workshop will explore the strength of games, their use in healthcare and ways designers can make games a meaningful experience, while educational sessions will focus on cognitive and positive psychology, resilience, corporate wellness, nutrition, active gaming, training and education, research, wearables and behavior change.”

Featured speakers include:

  • Eric Bauman, Devry University
  • Dr. Thomas Talbot, USC Institute for Creative Technologies (Keynote: How Serious Games and Detroit’s Car Industry are Similar)
  • Nicole Gutherie, Hope Lab (Re-Mission, video games for young cancer patients)
  • Joe Kozhaya and Chris Madison, IBM (Watson Games for Health case study)
  • Bill Sheahan, MedStar (professional training for medical personnel)
  • Sheryl Flynn, Blue Marble (research results using game-based therapy and preventative care)
  • Elizabeth Goodale, IBM (Watson Health Cloud)
  • Michael Ferguson, Ayogo (applications for behavior change)
  • European Update and Anti-Obesity Game — Grendel Games and Little Chicken

The Games for Health Pavilion on the mHealth Summit exhibit floor will showcase the use of videogames and video game technologies to improve health and healthcare from both a provider and patient perspective. This interactive, hands-on exhibit will inform and demonstrate how health and healthcare providers and organizations can use game technologies as part of a strategic approach in care delivery.

“Games for Health is the leading voice and professional community in the field of health games, representing the full spectrum of health technologies,” added Rich Scarfo, Vice President, Personal Connected Health Alliance at HIMSS, and Director of the mHealth Summit. “We are delighted to, once again, feature Games for Health as an important component of the mHealth Summit.”

The mHealth Summit takes place November 8-11, 2015, at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in the Washington, D.C., area. The summit centers around the theme, “Anytime, Anywhere: Engaging Patients and Providers.” The four-day event features industry-leading keynote presentations, six tracks of disruptive, comprehensive programming, an interactive exhibit floor, pre-conference symposia and highly-anticipated sessions. The summit, along with the new Population Health and CyberSecurity Summits, comprise the new HIMSS Connected Health Conference, an all-inclusive event highlighting how technology is enabling the transformation of healthcare delivery.

Gamers’ Delight: 5 Gaming Innovations From Apple’s Special Event

Last year’s Apple event featured a series of game-changing announcements, from the introduction of the Apple Watch to the complete redesign (and upsizing) of the flagship iPhone. So it’s no surprise that the 2015 event was a slightly more subdued affair. There were no shocks to be found in CEO Tim Cook’s presentation, just a steady rollout of upgrades and improvements to Apple’s existing product lines, which are just enough to satisfy the demands of tech-happy consumers for another year.

However, many of the innovations that were announced are aimed directly at the heart of the gaming community. Here are just five reasons that gamers should be excited about Apple’s new product lineup.

iPhone 6s

The iPhone 6 was already a gaming powerhouse, but this year’s upgrade is almost unbelievably stacked. The 5.5-inch retina display and A9 chip built on a 64-bit architecture puts the iPhone 6s leagues ahead of any mobile gaming device (and any other smartphone for that matter). It also features 16GB of memory and a more efficient battery, so gamers don’t have to worry as much about playing “Final Fantasy 7” without a charge cable.

3D Touch

One of the biggest setbacks of touch screen gaming is the inability to differentiate between a firm or soft touch, which removes a level of precision that serious gamers demand. The iPhone 6s’ 3D touch changes that. For the first time, the iPhone’s touch screen can register even the subtlest of taps or swipes. For gamers that means more precise speed control in racing games and more sophisticated attack options in first-person shooters. It also is interesting to watch game developers explore the gameplay potential of 3D touch, just like they did drag-and-drop and swipe-based gaming.

The Apple Pencil

Touch-based gameplay greatly expanded the notion of what was possible with smartphone gaming. Now, the Apple Pencil has the potential of doing that as well. Not only can it judge the intensity of a tap with incredible precision, but by leaning the stylus gamers can alter the brushstroke thickness of the tip. Of course, the Apple Pencil has been designed with artists in mind, but it has a lot of potential as a game development tool. Plus, imagine the possibility of playing Fruit Ninja with a totally adjustable blade.

The iPad Pro

The 2015 iPad Pro is closer to a fully functional desktop computer, meaning it’s on its way to becoming a viable platform for serious gamers. In addition to the iPen, the new iPad Pro has a fully functional keyboard (sold separately) to give strategy and MMORPG players that much needed breathing room for carrying out an entire arsenal of attacks. Oh, and did I mention the breathtaking 12.9-inch retina display and competition-crushing A9X processor? Yep, it has those as well.

Apple TV

Perhaps the biggest gaming-related announcement came during the Apple TV presentation. Last year, the Apple TV was nowhere to be seen, so an upgraded device was expected for 2015. And Apple did not disappoint. The new Apple TV has its own operating system called tvOS, which features all the TV apps users desire. Plus, it has been upgraded under the hood with a 64-bit A8 processor and a 32GB hard drive. These upgraded stats prepare the Apple TV for its new role as a gaming console that supports gamers’ favorite titles from the App Store. A new “Guitar Hero” will even be released specifically for the platform.

Boston Festival of Indie Games Announces FIG Talks

The following is a press release from the Boston Festival of Indie Games.

The Boston Festival of Indie Games is excited to announce that an all-new event, FIG Talks, will take place January 16, 2016, at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center! After a successful BostonFIG 2015, which focused primarily on the Tabletop and Digital Showcases, along with a keynote speech by Susan Gold, festival organizers are looking forward to this new addition to the BostonFIG family in January.

FIG Talks is aimed at designers and developers, and for people who are interested in getting started creating games of their own. The talks will feature three main tracks:

  • Game Business: Challenges bootstrapping your studio; crowdfunding tips, tricks, and warnings; working with publishers; and how to make a living in the games industry.
  • Game Design: How to playtest a digital or tabletop game to success, presenting a game design methodology or framework, designing for narrative and designing for technical challenge, or even designing “serious” games.
  • Game Development: Workshops on particular engines or tools, technical reviews, intro to game development, game development tools, or anything else related to development.

Speaker submissions are now open – the deadline is November 15, 2015. Sponsorship positions are also available.

“Running FIG Talks as a separate event from our annual festival really allows us to explore all the topics and frontiers that we want to,” says Caroline Murphy, BostonFIG executive producer. “We already have some of the brightest minds in the industry involved in BostonFIG, and we can’t wait to dedicate a standalone event to hearing from them.”

Attendee tickets are not available yet — stay tuned for more info.

How to select great research questions?) to the unexpected (How to deal with the intricacies of academia, including organizational politics and malicious competitors?).

Yoshifumi Kitamura, the Conference Chair for SIGGRAPH Asia 2015, believes that this year’s edition will provide a completely different experience to participants – whether new or returning. “The theme for this year’s edition of SIGGRAPH Asia is a combination of revolutionary and evolutionary – the balance and harmony between disruptive innovation and the growth of the creation of new technologies. We received an overwhelming number of submissions this year, well beyond our expectations for each of the programs. I believe attendees to this year’s edition of SIGGRAPH Asia can expect to see and experience variety of exciting and high quality content and stand to benefit from the infinite possibilities and opportunities to learn and discover something new and different each day of the event.”

Q&A: Cindy Bowens Introduces Gamerz for Gamerz

We are excited to have been able to talk with Cindy Bowens about her new service, Gamerz for Gamerz!

Bowens and Michelle Butler, both veterans of the online video gaming industry, founded Gamerz for Gamerz just a few weeks ago. Gamerz for Gamerz was created to provide networking, communication and event services for both gamers and developers.

Here is what they had to say about the service!

Q: How and when did you get into the game industry?

A: I got into the game industry after hosting two events for “EverQuest” players in 1999. After the success of those EverQuest Gatherings, I was hired by Verant/SOE to oversee Fan Faires all over the country and be the community manager for “EverQuest.” I’ve been building online game communities and hosting events for gamers ever since!

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with Gamerz for Gamerz?

A: Michelle and I have always shared a passion for bringing gamers together to socialize and meet the people behind the games that they play. Gamerz for Gamerz was formed to bring the general population of the gaming community together, to be able to reconnect with old friends and find new gaming networks. We will soon be providing new ways to accomplish that both online and in person.

Q: How will you integrate different game styles and communities into one community?

A: The community we are building will consist of gamers and developers from all backgrounds and genres. But we will be providing ways for people to find one another within that large community. For example, we will soon be opening our VIP forums for industry professionals. This will be the first step in helping developers and other industry professionals find each other and begin to build their own subcommunities. That’s one of the keys to building a healthy community: strengthening your subcommunities.

Q: What will Gamerz for Gamerz offer to the community?

A: We will be offering online tools to help gamers connect. In addition, we will be hosting events for gamers to attend around the country. We will be announcing those details at the Halloween Launch Party!

Q: Will you be live streaming for your Halloween event?

A: We will be live streaming the Halloween event and plan on streaming all of our future events as well.

Q: How have big companies done in supporting their communities?

A: I think most companies, big or small, do all they can to try to support their communities. Most do a great job online, their community managers working closely with their dev teams and their audiences. But things like live events are extremely expensive and time-consuming for any company and community manager. We will be offering ways to help companies reach their audiences at lower costs and less stress and time commitment for their teams.

Q: How has social media impacted how game companies communicate with their players?

A: Social media has made community building much, much easier than it used to be. Jumping in now to build this company and community, I’ve been amazed and thrilled how much different it is to start everything now with social media. Back in the day, I had to accomplish all of this on message or bulletin boards!

Q: Is Gamerz for Gamerz a service for game players or industry pros?

A: We are here for both gamers and pros! We have always enjoyed providing ways for players and devs to interact. We will be providing services for both and offering ways for them to meet and mingle together both online and in person!

Q: Thanks for chatting with us about Gamerz for Gamerz, Cindy!

A: Thanks for the opportunity to coordinate with Events for Gamers! It’s exciting to see all of the different events and conventions available to industry pros and gamers.
