The Future of Gaming on Display at 2016’s E3 Summit

In just a few weeks, the world’s biggest video game technology conference will commence. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, is where the big three console makers, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, announce new hardware improvements and the major studios provide some first impressions of soon-to-be-released games.

Sony

Sony’s PlayStation 4 console was released about three years ago, and while it may be a bit early in the cycle for the PlayStation 5, that doesn’t mean hardware improvements won’t be released later this year.

The rumored upgrade, dubbed the PlayStation 4.5, would support game resolutions of up to UHD 4K, rather than the 1080p resolution in which PlayStation 4 runs. This would make sense given the price drops of 4K televisions and demand for higher resolution content.

Even if the Playstation 4.5 does not materialize this year, this announcement could mean the strong possibility of more virtual reality content for PlayStation’s VR system. Currently, the PlayStation VR is one of the more competitive VR systems on the market due to its ability to work with the console. This would eliminate the need for new hardware like the Occulus or Vive systems.

Microsoft

While rumors of an upgraded Xbox One are circulating, they don’t seem to hold the same weight as the PS 4.5. If there is a change, it most likely will be a minor hardware tweak, like better wireless connectivity, larger or faster hard drives, or a shrinking of the form factor. This would be similar to the redesign of the Xbox 360 in the last console cycle.

As with Sony, Microsoft may be starting to integrate VR into its systems and games with Kinect, as well as the push of a VR headset, dubbed the HoloLens.

Nintendo

Nintendo has always done things a little differently from Microsoft and Sony. While these two giants tend to battle head to head with their releases and exclusive titles, Nintendo does its own thing. When the original Wii was released, some critics said it was “underpowered” compared to the current Xbox and PlayStation systems. Yet, it still sold incredibly well due to the “pure gameplay” users experienced, showing that when it comes to games, fun trumps everything else.

The Nintendo NX, the successor of the Wii U, will not be shown at E3 this year. Instead, it will have its own event in the future, and Nintendo will focus more heavily on one of its most popular franchises, The Legend of Zelda. Even without a heavy presence of Nintendo at this year’s E3, that doesn’t mean there won’t be interesting things in the future for Nintendo. Beyond its new Zelda game, many of Nintendo’s classic franchises are getting reboots, including Kirby, Metroid Prime and Pokemon.

The Pokemon games are also Nintendo’s first foray into mobile games not on the GameBoy or DS systems. Pokemon GO, which is rumored to be released later this year, is an augmented reality game in which gamers can travel the world and catch their own Pokemon using a smartphone like the Galaxy S7.

Bandai Namco Announces North American TEKKEN 7: The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2016

Game developer and publisher Bandai Namco is clearly not content to let rival Capcom have all the fun with fighting game tournaments (i.e., Capcom Cup). Today, the company formally announced the TEKKEN 7: The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2016.

Leading Bandai Namco team members involved in this project, quoted in the press release, sound off about the tour.

“The TEKKEN series is a cornerstone of the fighting game community and continues to evolve and advance the genre forward with each installment,” said Katsuhiro Harada, director of TEKKEN Project at Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. “I’m excited to see what the North American TEKKEN community is made of as they compete over the next seven months in the TEKKEN 7: The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2016 in North America.”

“The TEKKEN 7: The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2016 — North America series of events expands upon our tournament footprint that was set in motion earlier this year through our partnership with Wizard World Comic Cons and Gaming Tour,” said Eric Hartness, Vice President of Marketing at Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. “The added reach of the TEKKEN 7: The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2016 – North America events will ensure that TEKKEN fans across the country will have an opportunity to experience the next chapter of the storied TEKKEN video game franchise and compete for cash and glory.”

Ahead of the home release of the seventh in the brawler series, there will be a months-long competition through 18 major North American cities. On the line will be bragging rights and cold hard cash. Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that tournaments are perceived as the modern-day communal arcade; the tournament series will be the only way North American fans will have a chance to play the arcade version of “TEKKEN 7.”

As a matter of fact, some fans and competitive gamers have already had a chance to get their hands on “TEKKEN 7.” The tournament got its start on February 19, 2016 at Wizard World in Portland, Oregon. The next tournament will be held in Chicago at Combo Breaker, on May 27th-29th. Tournaments will be hosted at Wizard World Comic Con and Gaming tour sites and other key fighting game circuit cities. Each tournament offers $3,000 to the local champ with a grand prize of $20,000 awaiting the King or Queen of the Iron Fist Tournament. Austin Game Conference 2016 Announces Keynote and First Round of Speakers

The reborn Austin Game Conference has seen a slew of recent news, including the keynote speaker and the first round of speaker announcements. This week, the former was announced via an official AGC press release and the latter list in a website post on the conference site.

Keynote

Mixed reality gets the nod from the “holy trinity” of augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality. Graeme Devine, chief game wizard at Magic Leap has been tapped for a keynote slot. The topic is the convergence of mixed reality, which is logical since Magic Leap is specializing in that space.

Devine is no stranger to the game development world. You don’t earn a title like “chief game wizard” if you’re new to the scene, after all.  Straight from the press release: “A gaming industry veteran with a storied 30-year career innovating across multiple platforms, technologies and major titles, Devine is currently contributing to Magic Leap’s mixed reality computing platform. Among many verticals and industries, the platform will enable game developers to design and create unprecedented experiences that seamlessly integrate their digital and physical lives. Devine began his career at Atari at age 16 and has since helped bring numerous games to life, including “Pole Position,” “The 7th Guest,” “The 11th Hour,” “Quake III Arena,” “Doom 3” and, most recently, “Halo Wars.” At Apple Inc., Devine held a key position in iPhone Game Technologies, ensuring iOS devices provided users with unmatched gaming experiences.”

Austin Game Conference Executive Director Christopher Sherman adds, “Devine is a pioneer whose career is synonymous with the forefront of an ever-changing industry. He’s a constant innovator who continues to redefine the leading edge, and we’re very pleased to get a peek at how he’s taking game development to a whole new level.”

What’s New for Women in Game Industry Events?

The breadth and depth of the participation of women in the game industry has generally been under increasingly close scrutiny in recent years. This scrutiny also includes the way women are perceived at, or participate in, trade shows and conventions. Much of this heightened awareness is amplified when hiccups and horror stories — like this, this or even this — make the rounds.

Still, especially with the increased issue awareness and near statistical parity between men and women playing games, the game industry as a whole seems to have put greater focus toward the greater participation of women. Here’s a few news bites from the events corner of the games industry that highlight some of the works-in-progress.

Gen Con 2016

This year, for the first time, Gen Con‘s list of 25 Industry Insiders, who are feature presenters at the popular cross-spectrum gaming con in Indianapolis will be close to even participation between men and women. In fact, 13 of the 25 Industry Insiders will be women.

“Five years ago, the ratio of women to men in the Insiders was 1:16 (6.25 percent). Two years ago, it was 4 out of 25 (16 percent)”, says Paizo Games’ Jessica Price, who called attention to this news.

Price adds as further context the value she sees in this major change in industry leaders spotlighted at Gen Con, stating: “… women being recognized as gaming authorities, our work being highlighted, our input being sought, and just our presence in equal numbers with men helps. It relieves the pressure on us as individuals to Speak For All Women In Games. It allows us to be people first and representatives of a demographic second. It normalizes our presence, our expertise and our authority.”

Unity “Woman in Gaming” Workshops

The popular software/game development platform Unity3D has freshly announced a new series of international workshops. Most developers may be familiar with their numerous globe-spanning game development or certification workshops, but this time the focus is on women and their careers in the game industry.

Each of the events will feature prominent, accomplished women in the games business. The stated purpose of the workshops is to take on the complex issues around women’s careers in gaming, while creating networking opportunities to strengthen the connections between women professionals in the games industry.

Five events are planned in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Amsterdam, between June and November 2016. The events will be free and open to the public.

The full post about the workshops is here on Unity’s blog.

MCV’s Women in Game Awards

From workshops to award ceremonies, major United Kingdom-based trade publication MCV has introduced their list of the 30 most influential women game development in the U.K. Among them are leaders from Bethesda Softworks, Warner Brothers and other AAA developers/publishers and indie studios, too.

To top it off, MCV is also celebrating the selection and publication of the list with the Women In Games Awards, to be held in London on Thursday, May 19.

We at Events for Gamers will be keeping an eye out for other news and events from the games industry, as it continues to diversify and open its doors in new and different ways.

Game Industry Must Learn That Uncompensated Crunch Isn’t Normal

From VentureBeat with Kate Edwards: After the International Game Developers Association announced our renewed focus on crunch time at GDC 2016, including ensuring fair compensation for the persistent practice in our industry, a new dialogue has resulted around whether or not crunch time is truly a “problem” and the role it plays in the game industry’s creative process.

Without a doubt, crunch time has a long legacy in the game industry. But the reality is crunch times are common in many creative media, including games, film, television, literature, and so forth. Part of the inherent nature of creative works is that they’re never truly complete (in fact the notion of a “content complete” date often remains a running joke). Creative works reach a point of sufficient release because they’re typically tied to a specific date that dictates all the related machinery around the work’s launch (such as marketing campaigns). In many cases, the creative project gets extended in some form – such as director’s cuts of films, downloadable content in games, sequels to books, and so on. So we have to accept the reality that as another art form, games are not immune to experiencing that final push to achieve the best possible vision of the creative work.

However, the strong exception must be made when that final push isn’t final at all; it becomes a persistent method for normal working conditions — as has been the case in the game industry for far too long. While some try to wrongly justify this approach as a test of true dedication to game development, or worse, glorify it as an honorable and effective way to create game content, the reality is extended periods of crunch for weeks or months are a proven case of diminishing returns.

Condoning unrelenting, ongoing, uncompensated crunch as some form of positive value for the game industry is an antiquated notion, and it continues to harm the industry’s image and its capability to attract top talent, who now have many other tech-oriented options to choose from. My hope is that by highlighting this issue, we’ll see more companies rethink their approach to crunching and realize the importance of valuing the people who work for them as creative professionals and human beings and not just easily replaceable cogs in a machine.

Twitch Releases TwitchCon 2016 Details

0

TwitchCon 2016 made news quickly when the livestreaming company, Twitch, announced the convention was going to move to San Diego this year from the backyard of its headquarters in downtown San Francisco. After that major change, it has been quiet — at least until this week.

A major press release from Twitch about TwitchCon 2016 hit the street, with plenty of news about what’s going to get jam-packed into the convention and the tickets that will get you in.

Tickets

If you know you want to attend TwitchCon 2016, do not pass go, don’t collect $200, go to directly to the registration page and grab what you what can before the event sells out. Ticket types are Community, Partner and Industry, with Industry as the new option. The Industry pass is for those involved in the development, publishing and/or promotion of products and services engaged with the Twitch community. Pass types include the option of three-day or single-day passes, ranging (currently) from $44 to $399.

Special Guests

TwitchCon wouldn’t be a show about the community of livestreaming if it wasn’t also a celebration of its broadcast celebrities from around the world. In fact, Twitch makes a point to highlight the broadcaster brand names who will be in the spotlight at the show:

“… fans can expect to meet featured broadcasters from Europe, including Sacriel, B0aty, and InTheLittleWood from United Kingdom, sp4zie from Sweden, Gronkh from Germany, and MissCoookiez from Latvia.”

If you crave being as current as possible, Twitch just updated its list of featured broadcasters attending in this tweet.

Daybreak Events

Daybreak, inheritor of many familiar MMOGs from Sony, will be partnering (again) with Twitch this year. The second H1Z1 Invitational tournament is defined as a spectator-friendly, fast-moving and large-scale fight-to-the-death player-versus-player shooter tournament. The first time around, the H1Z1 Invitational attracted 365,000 viewers to watch 60 broadcasters and players compete in battle royale matches for their piece of the action from a $173,000 prize pool.

Leading up to TwitchCon, at PAX East 2016 Daybreak is kicking off it “Road to TwitchCon” with King of the Kill livestreams from April 23-24. Fans can check in to watch some of last year’s invitational participants duke it out in battle royale matches. As this is a “road to TwitchCon,” the PAX East weekend is only the beginning, with news about the prize pool, competitors, community contests, on-site TwitchCon qualifiers and more through the summer.

TwitchCon 2016 will take place September 30 to October 2, 2016, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego. To check out the full TwitchCon press release, check this link.

eSports Zone No. 1

eSports is, by any measure, a rapidly growing segment of gaming, live media and the event space. Research firm Newzoo keeps its fingers on the pulse of related data, and it found that the global eSports market is growing from $325 million in 2015 to $463 million in 2016. By 2019, that number will more than double to $1.1 billion in value. From our perspective, Events for Gamers, after all, includes events for pro gamers, too.

There’s plenty of news to share from the world of eSports, and we’re going to do our best to help you keep up with at least some of the stories from that past-paced world.

eSports in the Olympics?

ESPN reports that there’s a chance that eSports may become a recognized Olympics sport by as early as 2020. The International e-Sports Federation submitted a request to the International Olympic Committee on February 19, in pursuit of a pathway to recognition for competitive gaming in the Olympics. The request received a reply April 8, which now leaves the ball in IeSF’s court to respond to the IOC.

Does that potentially add up to seeing the likes of “League of Legends” and “StarCraft II” under the very big international spotlight at Tokyo in four years? We’ll see.

How about eSports in NFL stadiums?

Maybe you’re also ready for your favorite game competitions to hit major sports venues closer to home. According to an [a]list Daily interview with Mike Sepso, senior vice president at Activision Blizzard (and eSports industry veteran), Sepso anticipates eSports events to take place at NFL stadiums. If the eSports experience can sell out a smaller arena, it might be ready for a stadium, he suggests.

SteelSeries at PAX East

A well-known gaming gear company, SteelSeries, is loading up it gear for show-and-tell at the Boston-based behemoth, PAX East 2016. Among the holy PC-gaming accessory trifecta of keyboards, headsets and mice to be represented, there’s a new “tournament ready” keyboard in town. Namely, the APEX M500 tournament-ready mechanical keyboard, entering the clickety-clackety fray at $99.99, with anti-ghosting technology, cable management, Cherry MX Red switches and blue LED lighting.

Maybe we’ll see this keyboard used, or partnered with, at upcoming eSports tournaments. For now, it’ll be shown off at PAX East.

Kingston and ESL

There are a few sources of news from eSports more active than the stream of updates coming down the pipeline from the Electronic Sports League Pro network. Among the tournament events they organize, ESL One is one of the biggest.

Hardware heavyweight Kingston has just partnered with its 2016 mega-event tour. Kingston provides high-performance SSD and memory for the guts of the PCs used in the tournaments, while allowing fans to try out the HyperX Cloud and Cloud II gaming headsets.

Speaking of ESL …

ESL has no shortage of news from recent months. Still, from just the last couple of weeks alone, ESL One Cologne has been announced as a “Valve Major” for its $1 million major tournament, for 16 of the world’s best Counter-Strike Offensive Teams. The stadium event will be hosted in Cologne, Germany’s LANXESS arena July 8-10, 2016.

Thanks for reading the first edition of “eSports Zone”! We hope to see you for our next edition coming soon.

Kickstarter to Host Games Dungeon at PAX East 2016

0

Kickstarter shared some details about its Games Dungeon at PAX East 2016, which takes place April 22-24, 2016, in Boston. Here’s what the company had to say on its blog:

“Publishers, developers, and the games community at large are descending on Boston from April 22-24 for PAX East, one of the largest games events in North America — and we’ll be there to host the Kickstarter Games Dungeon. From a 2-D adventure through hell to an acrade-style indie music game featuring Tegan and Sara, METZ, to that game about exploding kittens, there’ll be some seriously amazing Kickstarter-funded tabletop and video games for you to peruse, explore, and — of course — play.”

Kickstarter Games Dungeon will feature at least the following games:

Tabletop Games

Video Games
