Founder of Epic Games and Creator of ZZT and Unreal, Tim Sweeney, To Be Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Game Developers Choice Awards (Press Release)

17th Annual Awards Ceremony to Take Place on March 1 at GDC in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Jan. 20, 2017 – Organizers of the 17th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards, the premier accolades for peer recognition celebrating the industry’s top games, studios and developers, will recognize Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games and creator of ZZT, Unreal and Unreal Engine, with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sweeney will be honored at the Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony, taking place on Wednesday, March 1st, 2017 at 6:30pm at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the 2017 Game Developers Conference, and in conjunction with the Independent Games Festival (IGF). The ceremonies are available to attend for all GDC 2017 pass-holders and will be livestreamed on the GDC’s official Twitch channel at www.twitch.tv/gdc.

Sweeney founded seminal shareware game publisher Epic MegaGames in 1991, and the release of its first product, ZZT, led to an explosion of user-created worlds. ZZT has become so beloved as a game/application that it recently led to a full-length book dissection – in the Boss Fight Books series – of the games and culture it created. An expanded Epic MegaGames also released titles such as Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball and Tyrian in the ‘90s as a leader in the PC shareware space.

While serving as the founder and CEO of a renamed Epic, Sweeney was the main architect of the first-generation Unreal Engine. This game engine was originally created for the 1998 PC game Unreal. But it became the underpinning for a slew of acclaimed games, initially in the Unreal franchise and increasingly licensed outside of Epic, including the BioShock series, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, and the Batman: Arkham series.

Sweeney also worked to make the Unreal Engine extensible via UnrealScript, a spiritual successor to his object-oriented scripting language for ZZT. This simple way for non-coders to get complex creations made easily led to extensive and creative player modding of games – one of the earliest blossoming of user-generated content.

But it also led to easier adaptations of the engine – which has now had four major iterations – to other games. These include Epic’s own titles such as Gears of War, Paragon and Fortnite, as well as notable independently created games such as Rocket League, Abzû, Astroneer and ARK: Survival Evolved. The engine is now being adapted by non-game development teams across the automotive, aviation, architecture, VR/AR, complex data visualization and film sectors.

Sweeney joins the roster of previous Lifetime Achievement Award recipients which includes Todd Howard, Shigeru Miyamoto, Warren Spector, John Carmack, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Hideo Kojima, Sid Meier, Ken Kutaragi, Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk and Peter Molyneux, among others.

Recipients of the Lifetime Achievement award are chosen by the Game Developers Choice Awards Advisory Committee, which includes notable game industry leaders such as Mark Cerny (Cerny Games), Doug Lombardi (Valve), Angie Smets (Guerrilla Games), Amir Rao (Supergiant Games) and Jade Raymond (Electronic Arts).

Latin America Continues to Be Important Region in Global Mobile Industry

0
Maimi, November 2017 According to the latest GSMA report, LatAm countries still remain untapped and will add almost 150 million new mobile internet subscribers by 2020. Smartphone and 4G penetration (and coming soon 5G) will continue creating new opportunities for growth, innovation, and a flourishing start-up environment.

At the same time, the Latin American games market is the second fastest growing sector in the world, as stated in the recent Newzoo report. This year the region, which includes Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, is expected to generate $4.1bn in video game revenues, a 20% growth YoY. The revenue figures put Latin America just behind Southeast Asia in terms of gaming market growth worldwide.

The boost of the mobile ecosystem in Latin America is creating new opportunities, particularly for new, small and medium enterprises that can benefit from increased connectivity to develop content, applications and solutions to add value in new areas. Meet and collaborate with LATAM’s brand and content owners, publishers, independent developers and game studios, payment apps, fintech startups, solution providers, advertising and user acquisition platforms, mobile/network operators, media agencies and the whole mobile ecosystem in Latin America.

Participating in Latam Mobile Summit will help you to accelerate the innovation process within your organization, create new valuable connections, build partnerships and expand your business in Latin America.

Punching Above Your Weight at PAX Australia!

From Gamasutra: How do you evaluate the worth of going to industry shows?

First things first – Australia is far away from many of the largest game development hubs in the world.

We don’t have a lot of domestic shows to choose from, making it tougher to fairly evaluate the benefits of PAX Australia for a domestic dev vs. international dev. But let’s break it down.

When you’re looking at showing at a game event, you must know what your goals are. Without goals, you don’t have the data you need to reflect on what went well, and what could go better next time.

Your goals for showing at an event like PAX Aus may include:

– Get more confident and natural at pitching your game to consumers, media and colleagues
– Get more qualitative and quantitative feedback from consumers (beyond your friends and/or other game devs!)
– Gain media coverage
– Drive support for a new Kickstarter or crowdfunding campaign
– Trying to find a suitable publisher for your title
– Sell copies of your released game(s) and/or merchandise
– Celebrate your progress, release, or just share your game baby with the public!
– In our opinion, PAX Aus is a great show for some, but not all of these goals.

All shows that our team has attended have been valuable. But all have been helpful for different reasons, and we want to stress that we don’t recommend developers see one single public event to be ‘make or break’ for their title. Your mileage may vary with our pros and cons lists, but this is how we evaluate making the choice to show at PAX Australia.

Theme 3: Revealing Participating lineup
Players’ Anticipation —Virtual Reality Game Experiences
● Jan. 20th-24th, 2017: B2C—Online Games, Mobile Games, Console Games, VR, Live Streaming Events
According to the report by MIC, the revenue of Taiwan game market reached NTD 42 billion in 2015, among which mobile games accounts for the largest part at NTD 24.3 billion. And as the market penetration of E-sport and smartphone devices are getting so deep that it can drive the growth of whole market, it is estimated that the Taiwan game market revenue will reach NTD 53 billion by 2019.

Based on the game ranking of two major platforms, Google Play and App Store, it shows that Taiwan players have high acceptance for all games of other countries, reflecting the free competition and liberal market of Taiwan. CES 2017 Preview: News, Rumors, Key Dates and What to Expect in Las Vegas

From TrustedReviews.com: CES 2017 is one of the biggest events in the tech calendar, and we’re now just weeks away from January’s Las Vegas tradeshow. Read on for all the latest CES 2017 news, rumours, key dates, and more.

WHAT IS CES?

One of the biggest technology tradeshows in the world, the Consumer Electronics Show (or CES, for short), takes place in Las Vegas every January. The show sees big-name firms like Samsung, LG and Ford flock to the city to flaunt their latest wares, and CES 2017 will be no different.

Media registration for the event has already begun. Here’s how the organisers reckon it’ll make you feel: “The moment you find what you didn’t know you were looking for, when you feel like you might have found the next unicorn, when your eyes and your brain stare blankly at each other and the only thing your mouth can muster is ‘whoa’.”

Right…

WHEN IS CES 2017?

CES always takes place every January. For 2017, it’s on 5-8 January. But you can guarantee that some of the bigger companies will show off their new goodies in the days leading up the show, typically at dedicated press conferences.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT CES 2017

Unfortunately, because it’s still early days, very few of the major companies have announced their press events, and the organisers of CES are still keeping a lid on the show schedule.

We’re still a little way off CES 2017, so very few tech brands have highlighted their intentions for the show – and the CES organisers aren’t coughing up much info either. That said, it’s guaranteed that almost every major tech firm you’ve heard off will be attending – except for Apple, which doesn’t do tradeshows.

What’s curious about CES is that it falls straight after Christmas, which means most companies will have already announced their flagship products about three months earlier. This means CES tends to be a hotbed of (1) spin-off devices like the LG G Flex, or (2) concept products, like Razer’s Project Christine.

Head to GDC 2017 for Practical Tips on Making Games With a Shoestring Budget

From Gamasutra.com: Heads up, game devs: 2017 Game Developers Conference organizers are happy to announce another great talk taking place at the show that addresses a tricky but all-too-real topic — making games on shoestring budgets.

In “Development on a Shoestring: Ultra Low Budget Indie Games”, Corbomite Games chief Oded Sharon will share practical, actionable advice on doing just that.
