5 Android Games You Need to Download

The Google Play store is overflowing with game options, which can make choosing your next download a little overwhelming. With awesome graphics, interesting storylines and plenty of action and suspense, these Android games will make it difficult to put down your phone.

Super Mario Run

The first Nintendo game made for mobile has arrived. While it is free to download, “Super Mario Run” only includes three levels before you have to pay $9.99. It’s a steep price for a mobile game, but there are no further in-app purchases, and fans of Mario will find that it’s worth it. The controls are simple — in fact, there’s only one. You simply tap the screen to jump and attempt to collect as many coins as possible. This makes it simple enough for children, but the colors and nuances of the different levels make it just as entertaining for adults.

The Room 3

If you are on the hunt for an immersive puzzle game, “The Room 3” is your perfect fit. Between the ambient music and stunning graphics, it feels like you are in the game as you race to solve puzzles and uncover clues. It is a large 539 MB download, so be sure that you are using a phone that can handle the size and detail of this game. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch display and an octa-core processor, which make it the perfect device to play this complicated game. Secret passageways, alternate endings and more will keep you entertained for hours.

Star Wars: Force Arena

Bring your favorite movie series to your phone. In “Star Wars: Force Arena,” you can play as a team of your most-loved “Star Wars” characters in a series of interactive battles. Play on your own or invite your friends to form a team and fight other players from around the world. Even if you are not a “Star Wars” fan, the large selection of characters and abilities, plus the interactivity with other players make it worth a download. This is another game with a lot to see, so a large and clear phone screen is preferable.

Crashlands

Since its release, “Crashlands” has been making waves as one of the top mobile games available, and it’s not without reason. It is basically a combination of a survival crafting game and an action RPG. Made to be enjoyable by all, it offers a lot of user-friendly features. For example, if your character dies, you can simply return to your grave and all of your items will return. Your tools do not break, and you never run out of inventory space. Go on quests, level up and fight your enemies. It’s fun, funny and well worth the $4.99 download.

Reigns

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be king? In “Reigns” you get to find out. Take your seat on the throne, and start making decisions for your people. Citizens and problems appear as cards, and you are in control with just a swipe right for a “yes” decision or left for “no.” All of your decisions add up, and affect areas of your kingdom, such as the treasury. And if you are not successful and lose the throne, the game continues as you take the place of your own predecessor. Can you keep your domain prosperous?

Mobile gaming on Android has been explosive over the past few years. Graphics have improved, levels have become more complicated and Android phones are keeping up with amazing displays and speed. Don’t miss out on some of the best games out there.

Parks Associates Releases New IoT Forecasts: More than 442 million connected consumer devices will be sold in the U.S. in 2020

Parks Associates announced new, comprehensive IoT forecasts during the pre-show research workshops for CONNECTIONS™ today. Analysts presented data showing more than 442 million connected consumer devices will be sold in the U.S. in 2020. These sales totals include connected entertainment, mobile, health, and smart home devices. Personal assistant devices, which include speakers with voice control such as the Amazon Alexa and Google Home, are the fastest growing category with a CAGR of 78.3% in 2015-2020. The firm further examines the role of voice in the IoT in the newly released whitepaper “Impact of Voice on Connected Consumer Markets.”

Parks Associates’ 21st-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference takes place this week, May 23-25, at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport. The event features analyst presentations on new consumer research and panel discussions with high-level executives from start-ups, Fortune 500, venture capitalist, public relations, and media companies. Executives from Comcast, Cox Communications, Intel, Qualcomm Technologies, and Vivint Smart Home will deliver keynotes.

“Voice control is the top trend for 2017 in the IoT and smart home and a main focus of discussion at CONNECTIONS™,” said Elizabeth Parks, SVP, Parks Associates. “Parks Associates research shows U.S. consumers will buy more than 2.3 billion connected devices between 2015 and 2020, and they are showing strong preferences for voice as the interface for their devices. Companies in the smart home, entertainment, and connected car ecosystems are pursuing partnerships that can add voice control to a variety of solutions in the connected home.”

“We’ve only scratched the surface of what the connected home can do for consumers and companies,” said William Greene, Product Manager, Energy Services, Nest Labs. “At Nest, we’ve learned that combining connected devices with simple – yet sophisticated – software can meet the connected consumer’s expectations for reliability and convenience while opening new opportunities for engagement. In addition to creating happier and more loyal customers, this enhanced engagement can benefit companies and precipitate revolutionary changes in verticals like energy utilities. Every connected consumer represents an opportunity for huge advancements in engagement strategy, operational efficiency, and the realization of shared benefits across industries and regions.”

“Wi-Fi is by far the dominant technology for connected products – the vast majority of broadband homes have Wi-Fi. However, historically it has been too complex to get headless products connected to Wi-Fi,” said Rob Conant, CEO, Cirrent. “Nearly 40% of the negative reviews of smart home products are the result of connectivity and setup issues. Making it easy for end users to connect products is critical to the success of the industry.”

“As consumer awareness of the connected home grows we will discuss how companies move further into the mainstream by delivering valuable solutions that solve real-world problems in ways that are tangible to homeowners,” said Scott Harkins, VP IoT Partner Programs Honeywell Connected Home & Buildings, Honeywell.

CONNECTIONS™ sponsors include Intel Corporation, Vivint Smart Home, Asurion, Greenwave Systems, Assurant Solutions, HelloTech, Xively by LogMeIn, Alarm.com, Centercode, ROC-Connect, Support.com, ULE Alliance, Verisk, AMT Warranty, Arrayent, Audio Analytic, August Home, Ayla Networks, Cirrent, Cross Country Home Services, Deutsche Telekom, EVRYTHNG, FIBARO, mnubo, OneEvent Technologies, Somfy, Whisker Labs, Z-Wave, Amazon Alexa, HomeAdvisor, Nortek Security & Control, Tyco, leakSMART™, and MivaTek.

eSports Zone No. 3

This column has been on an extended vacation, touring the world, taking pictures and finding itself, but now eSports Zone is back to wrap up a little of the amazing news in the fast-moving world of competitive gaming. Let’s review (and we promise to skip the long, boring slide show from that trip):

eSCON USA Agenda is Online

This news is as fresh as newly baked bread. Just announced today, eSCON USA’s agenda (which will require email and other info to download it). This Kisaco Research conference will be hosted in Los Angeles in September 13-14. Expect senior level attendees from various aspects of the world of eSports, blended together into an intimate multi-track conference format. If you are more sure than less sure you will attend, if you sign up by June 23, you can cinch a $300 discount by quoting “EM1” at checkout.

Biz-eSports Summit Underway

Just as current as the other news we shared, the Biz-eSports Summit is currently underway, which just goes to show how much news makes its way out of the eSports world every day. Also held in Los Angeles, this conference, which as its moniker suggests, is built around the booming business of eSports, is taking place today and tomorrow (May 19th).

Facebook and ESl partner on eSports Livestreaming

Another fresh announcement: this time not in the domain of talking about eSports but showing eSports to its audience. CNET reports that ESL will be partnering with Facebook to show almost 5,500 hours of livestreaming eSports. From those thousands of hours of Counter Strike: Global Offensive Rank S competitive game play, about 1,500 hours will be exclusive to the giant social media platform’s audience. For the gamers jumping into the digital ring, $40,000 will be awarded to the point leaders in the league.

Pro Sports Team Buys eSports Team

This headline above echoes an increasingly common theme among traditional pro sports clubs, who buy their own eSports team. This time around, The Guardian posted about Sydney-based football (soccer) league, the Adelaide Crows, who has now acquired the top-performing Legacy team, who competes in League of Legends in the Oceanic Pro League.

Universities and eSports

Two news blurbs for the price of one but both are about the college world and competitive gaming! UK-based Staffordshire University, Esports News UK reports, is now rolling out a three-year course around organizing a commercial eSports event, covering PR, marketing, technical and production considerations as well as other nuts and bolts issues that go into building an eSports enterprise. On the American side of the pond, Indiana Tech University, which has the distinction of helping to found the National Association of Collegiate Esports, is recruiting quality eSports players in a way that echoes a long-held tradition of collegiate sports searching for the most talented athletes for their traditional teams (via IndyStar).

With so much news from the world of competitive gaming coming out, eSports Zone No. 4 is sure to be on its way soon!

The Future of Live Gaming

Credit: Pixabay

To truly assess the technological changes we’ve made in the past 20 years, all we have to do is look at how gaming has evolved to see how far we have come. We’ve moved past arcade games, to single player consoles, to console gaming with anyone around the world, to online PC gaming with anyone, anywhere – including those who don’t even exist, from the virtual world. But where next for the future of live gaming?

Many detractors of anything live critique the “lag” factor that can sometimes require a lot of time to wait for things to load. Increasingly, we want to be using our mobiles to game in small, easy chunks of gameplay – according to Trent Oster, business development exec at Beamdog – something that might not be attainable with the way long, live games are designed. That being said, the amount of time we spend mobile gaming, according to a Statista report, has increased from 46 minutes in 2011 to 258 minutes in 2017 – showing that when we do get into a game, we really get into it.

Games such as Call of Duty harnessed the power of live streaming action from one person to another in short sharp bursts with campaigns that allowed players to dip in and dip out of the servers. Call of Duty recently announced how it was harnessing the power of virtual reality to bring players into the future. Virtual reality is the final frontier of gameplay – the fourth wall that needs to be broken to truly encapsulate the living, breathing world the game occupies.

Credit: Owlchemy Labs via Facebook.

But it’s not just shoot-em-ups that can harness the future of live gaming – the engrossing live streaming element and the in-your-face virtual reality atmosphere. Minecraft, the ever-popular brick-world survival and supremacy game features a live version for Xbox, allowing players to connect with other players around the world.

It’s not just fantasy that is being mimicked in live VR. By taking the casino table out of the casino and onto our screens, providing the same immersive experience, a new host of people can be introduced to the fun side of gaming, without having to go to a casino. Read on here to discover how the likes of HD webcams, RFID chips and special software has helped live roulette make progress into the land of virtual reality,

From the fantastical to the more mundane: Job Simulator allows players to be the artificial intelligence that will replace human jobs by 2050 (according to the game) – all in virtual reality. Euro Truck Simulator 2 allows players to be truckers in virtual reality – for those who have always wanted a have a go at trucking down the expansive European autobahn system.

It seems that the future of live gaming, bringing together the elements of virtual reality we will see increasingly more often, has only just been breached. With talk of nanotech VR being not too far away – which would allow the human body to break into the virtual world – as the Virtual Reality Society report here indicates, the scope for virtual reality live gaming is seemingly endless.

Playcrafting’s PLAY NYC 2017 Event Announced

Nothing says New York City like great food, culture, history, sports teams and touristy stops. However, there are some folks who would like to add “gaming” to that list of defining NYC features.

To that end, Playcrafting, an indie game development-focused training and events community in San Francisco, Boston and New York City, is taking their game to the next level. PLAY NYC, a two day event for gamers of all stripes has been formally announced.

PLAY NYC brings a larger-scale consumer friendly consumer game play experience to New York City, as region usually dominated by Boston’s PAX East or New York Comic Con, which has partially addresses gaming audiences in that show. For context, Polygon recently published a deep dive feature on the expanding New York City gaming community, including info on PLAY NYC and its organizers.

Coming up on August 19th and 20th, Playcrafting is expecting about 5,000 attendees to join game creators and other industry pros in playing, showing and talking about games at PLAY NYC. As the name itself helpfully hints, the event will be hosted in the heart of New York City, at the sprawling Terminal 5 venue, which is stacked with over 20,000 square feet and three floors  and a rooftop. The organizers also predict the presence of one hundred booths, from both small and larger studios, will fill the space and ten talks and panels each day from industry leaders.

General admission rates (early bird until June 16th) are $20 for general admission and $50 for game industry developers and pros. Potential sponsors and press can also apply via the official site.

Stay tuned to the official event site for PLAY NYC and Events for Gamers for more info you can use, including speakers, presenting companies and more, as we close in on summer.

Play Expo Manchester 2017 Tickets Released

(Source: @richard31337 via Twitter)It’s back! For the sixth year, Play Expo Manchester will return to EventCity in October to wow gaming fans and hopefully reveal some secrets for the upcoming year of gaming, while revisiting the big releases from the previous year.

The convention – featuring everything from retro gaming, to arcade games, board games, cosplay, Minecraft, and the VR future of gaming – has released tickets for its October 14-15 weekend extravaganza.

The theme for this year is retro gaming, with a People’s Choice area opening up to allow fans to nominate through Facebook and then canvass for a retro game to be crowned the favourite. The winner will get a free ticket and the glory of having their game featured in the People’s Choice area. Fans of gaming through the years will be able to take a trip down memory lane of games that document their own lives.

With six months to go before the convention, there will be one thing on fans’ lips – what’s going to feature this year. Gaming is a socially fuelled pastime, and with social media playing a large part in gamers’ lives, whatever gets people talking will likely be the topic of convention conversation.

The most popular gaming – and pop culture – trend currently, is the superhero. From Marvel to DC to everything in between, the superhero has stormed its way from comic books, to film and TV, and has finally landed in the gaming sphere, creating a colossal wave of fan chatter. With the release of Insomniac’s (the people who brought us Ratchet and Clank) Spider-Man touted for a release before the year is out, the studio’s take on the web-slinging vigilante will likely have fans tongues wagging. Injustice 2 also joins the ranks of superhero games being released, set in the DC Universe of Batman and Superman. With both major superhero fandoms being catered for, 2017 continues to look to be the year of the superhero.

And it’s a smart gaming move, as superhero success is everywhere. South Park’s second foray into the world of video games in South Park: The Fractured But Whole features the player taking on the role of the new kid at school as he tries to join the gang’s superhero club. Superheroes are even finding their way onto online gaming, as Sun Bingo shows with a selection of superhero-themed slot games, especially the selection of retro Batman-themed games. Even Halloween saw Harley Quinn (from Suicide Squad fame) named as the most popular costume.

Rhythm gaming is also sparking a lot of interest. The basics involve tying the challenge of gameplay to a player’s sense of rhythm. Improved from the days of banging a drum in time, rhythm gaming has continued to evolve, as can be seen in new release Aaero. The player is sent hurtling through space and must utilize their sense of rhythm to control the craft – a galactic step away from making sure the correct notes were being struck on a drum kit.
