0

Do you wonder what it takes to run an indie game booth (and other aspects of attending) a large, bustling show for game developers and players?

That’s what one amateur documentarian looked to examine at this year’s PAX West. In this day-in-the-life video that looks at at Clapfoot, the developers behind the MMO action-strategy game, Foxhole, it examines the trials, tribulations and triumphs that makes indie game development life such a rollercoaster ride. This video is definitely a reminder that several days of con work and play is a marathon, not a sprint!

Whether you are an event coordinator, press, or general attendee, if you have an event video to share with us, please let us know and we’ll be happy to feature it.

French Startup Wizama Receives UX Design Award at IFA 2019

0

In recent years, a couple startups have tried to conjure up the alchemy of bringing classic (that is, papery) board and card games together with the digital, pixelated world that goes with interactive entertainment. In 2019, one of the companies that’s achieved a healthy dollop of visibility is Wizama‘s SquareOne console and paper-to-digital gaming library. Wizama is a French startup that describes their vision as an opportunity to bridge classic games to modern-age games as a way of connecting generations.

The SquareOne looks like a super-sized tablet tablet, which it essentially is and would need to be to approximate a tabletop-style gaming experience. The system specs bear that out as well:

The 7 lb. Android-based system is dominated by the 19″ TFT-LCD active multi-touch display, which features “170° Hardless surface Anti-reflective” wide angle viewability. A hexa-core ARM processor powers the SquareOne, Memory is set at 2GB and storage will be offered in 64 and 128GBs capacities. Connectivity is offered through Wi-FI, NFC and Bluetooth. On the audio side, 4 speakers are built into the system. The SquareOne has the gift of tongues with 32 language offerings, which should ensure the console will be accessible to an international audience.

Six games are set to be offered at the SquareOne launch, each of which are designed for board and tabletop style play. Wizama profiles their early catalog here.

Their SquareOne hardware platform had some of its first significant exposure at this year’s CES expo in Las Vegas. Now, at IFA Berlin, Europe’s largest technology expo, the company marked another milestone with the announcement about winning at the (affiliated) UX Design Awards. The UX Design Awards is a high-profile global competition with a specialized focus on user experience. The competition attracted 200 companies, from such rockstar companies as Samsung and Mercedes-Benz, from 20 different countries.

The SquareOne console snagged the win in the Product category. The award ceremony took place on September 6th:

Frank Botta, CEO and co-founder of Wizama, in the pofficial announcement about the company’s prize win:

“Our board game console was created to materialize a new era of connected social game, where every accessory, movement, effect and interaction is calculated and displayed in real time by and on a console featuring a look inspired by both the spirit of traditional and board games.”

From an event perspective, the SquareOne could be a strong evolutionary fit for classically tabletop-oriented events, like PAX Unplugged, BGG Con among others.

The SquareOne has been officially announced as “available in early 2019, but there doesn’t appear to be evidence of the tabletop console’s availability yet. Given the critical acclaim for the console in advance of its public availability, demand may grow with that acclaim.

The SquareOne’s suggested retail will be $499, including the console, four differently colored interactive pawns, 54 cards, one smart dice, one wireless dice track. and an AC power adapter.

Dreamhack and ESL to Launch Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Circuit in 2020

0

STOCKHOLM — Today, DreamHack and ESL (both part of Modern Times Group MTG AB) announced the new ESL Pro Tour, a circuit linking more than 20 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) tournaments and leagues. The ESL Pro Tour will feature an aggregate prize pool of more than $5 million (USD) for 2020 from competitions across five continents — making it, perhaps, the world’s largest and most lucrative circuit in Counter-Strike’s 20-year history.

The ESL Pro Tour will combine multiple, previously unconnected ESL and DreamHack tournaments into one narrative that builds toward two grand championships each year. The collaboration aims to create a more complete path from zero to hero for aspiring players, a more compelling story to follow for existing CS:GO fans, and a more transparent structure for new esports fans. Watch Hype Video HEREWatch interview video HERE.

“This collaboration will provide a deeper meaning and purpose to all of our properties, allowing us to provide fans with more thrilling experiences than before. On the other hand, it also represents a much larger and more attractive opportunity for sponsors and media to engage with the esports audience,”  said DreamHack Co-CEO Marcus Lindmark. “ESL Pro Tour mirrors our ambition to provide up-and-coming players with a clear pathway to become tomorrow’s esports professionals.”

“ESL’s growth in recent years has led us to rethink what we are doing. We have built some of the world’s most impressive esports tournaments, and it was the time to connect the dots where the outcome is a bigger picture that fits better with our vision for esports,” said ESL CEO Ralf Reichert. “This partnership between ESL and DreamHack will give youths a clearer and more complete path to becoming somebody, and a structure that is more welcoming and digestible for new esports fans.

ESL Pro Tour Competitions

Tournaments in the ESL Pro Tour will be organized into Challenger and Masters levels. The Challenger level will include DreamHack Open, the Mountain Dew League and ESL’s National Championships — those competitions will serve as a platform for teams to elevate themselves to Master- level tournaments. The Masters category will largely be arena tournaments with $250,000 or more in prize money, and will still feature the world’s best teams —these will include ESL One powered by Intel; Intel Extreme Masters; and DreamHack Masters. It will also include the 2020 format of the ESL CS:GO Pro League.

Teams will win points in the ESL Pro Tour ranking, and the best of them will compete in two Masters Championship finals each year at the world’s largest and most attended independent CS:GO Tournaments — ESL One Cologne (Germany); and Intel Extreme Masters Katowice (Poland).

ESL Pro Tour Structure

The ESL Pro Tour will be presented in detail at ESL One New York on the 28th of September to journalists and partners in a specific ESL Pro Tour media briefing. Please reach out to your dedicated ESL PR point of contact to receive accreditation.

Sold-out gamescom congress 2019 thrills with a huge variety of topics and compelling speakers

0

22 August 2019, Cologne: The gamescom congress on 21 August 2019 presented a successful balance of enthusiastic visitors and heavy-weight speakers, with over 900 visitors attending. Every one of the 103 speakers demonstrated the diverse potential of computer games, reinforcing the gamescom congress’ position as Europe’s leading think-tank for games and digitalization. Over the 48 programme items, the world of computer games was illuminated from all angles. The emphasis was on topics that move the digital generation forward. Intense discussion was particularly enjoyed in the “Debatt(l)e Royale” political forum. The panel was attended by the federal directors and general secretaries of the German political parties CDU, SPD, FDP, Die Linke and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. The gamescom congress takes place annually as part of gamescom and was sold out again this year.

The gamescom congress was opened on Wednesday, 21 August 2019 by Nathanael Liminski (Head of the NRW State Chancellery), Henriette Reker (Lord Mayor of the City of Cologne), Gerald Böse (CEO Koelnmesse GmbH) and Felix Falk (Managing Director game – the association of the German games industry). Immediately afterwards, the presenters Melek Balgün (journalist and eSports expert) and Peter Smits (YouTuber, PietSmiet) welcomed political celebrities Paul Ziemiak (CDU), Lars Klingbeil (SPD), Linda Teuteberg (FDP), Jörg Schindler (Die Linke) and Michael Kellner (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) to the political talk “Debatt(l)e Royale”.

In the subsequent keynotes, talks, panel discussions and workshops, the speakers demonstrated the impetus that digital games, games technologies and game developers provide. The programme of the new “Public Stage” was streamed live on the internet with Axel Voss MEP, discussing network policy and political communication in the age of YouTube. In the “Quartet of Game Culture”, Lena Falkenhagen and Nina Kiel talked about historically inspired game settings that are fictitious at the same time. Lively discussions also took place in the other lecture halls where the use of games in schools and the important topics of cultural integration and inclusion were discussed. Prof. Dr. Linda Breitlauch (Trier University of Applied Sciences), Aiman Mazyek (Central Council of Muslims in Germany), Kathrin Trattner (University of Graz) and Olaf Zimmermann (German Cultural Council) discussed the integrative power of computer games, whilst Mark Barlet of Able Gamers demonstrated how inclusive games can be for people with disabilities.

“In 2019, the gamescom congress has once again underlined its relevance. Here, the topics that keep digital Germany busy, are being discussed. From the question of how we want to discuss politics on the Internet in the future, to a future-proof protection of minors in digital media, to inclusion and diversity in games and digital education, a comprehensive programme with exciting participants from all over the world had been provided”, says Felix Falk, Managing Director of game – association of the German games industry. “One of our highlights is the ‘Debatt(l)e Royale’, which with a high-ranking cast, was once again unique.”

Games are also an important cultural asset and bring people together worldwide. The congress attracted guests from all industries; from science, politics, and education. This diversity is unique,” emphasises Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse GmbH”.

Video of the Month — Wicked6 Cyber Games Stream

There are plenty of great videos this month, especially from the bombastic fighting game tournament, EVO. But for something a little different, check out the livestream of another competitive gaming tournament that took place in Las Vegas, the Wicked6 Cyber Games tournament at the HyperX Esports Arena. No fireballs, no combos, nothing like that here. In this event, a collection of diverse collegiate teams, against the clock and each other, attempt to competitively solve security challenges in a game environment.

Since this is a new and unique sort of tournament, it might take some patience to decode what’s happening and follow the flow over the course of the five hour plus stream. Being familiar with infosec challenges and networking interfaces helps too.

(Okay, if you felt teased earlier…and in case you really, really need a fix of fighting mayhem, here’s thescore eSports’ highlight video from EVO 2019, too.)

Whether you are an event coordinator, press, or general attendee, if you have an event video to share with us, please let us know and we’ll be happy to feature it.
