0

KUALA LUMPUR (NOVEMBER 18, 2019) – Esports Pro League (ESPL) — a new global amateur esports tournament platform co-founded by former eSports.com CEO Michael Broda, iCandy Interactive Limited (ASX:ICI), and Malaysian behavioral data and technology innovation firm Sedania Innovator Berhad — has announced an exciting partnership with eGG Network (“eGG”), Southeast Asia’s largest esports television channel, to broadcast ESPL’s upcoming esports tournament slated for early 2020.

The eGG Network is owned by Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad (“Astro”) and broadcasts to eight countries in Southeast Asia and Australia, which hold a potential viewership reach of 100 million. eGG delivers high-quality esports entertainment to more than two million active viewers, broadcasting over 2,000 hours of live esports content a year in addition to hosting over fifty world-class regional events in its supported territories.

“The popularity of esports continues to grow at an accelerated rate because it’s not an elite sport that has the potential to discriminate. It’s global and for everyone, connecting all of the continents,” said ESPL CEO Michael Broda. “With our valued partners, eGG and Astro, we have extensive geographical coverage, enabling us to further grow our international esports ecosystem in this exciting phase of the esports industry.”

“The eGG Network is the leading esports platform in SEA with capabilities in content production and broadcasting,” said Astro’s Head of Sports, Lee Choong Khay. “Our channel is available in eight countries and we have strong engagement with gamers on our digital platform. With ESPL, more fans can catch the action and more gaming talents can be discovered.”

The signing of the agreement was witnessed by Sedania Founder and Group Managing Director Datuk Azrin Mohd Noor (“Datuk Azrin”), ESPL Co-founder and president Lau Kin Wai, Axis Esports Sdn Bhd Founder Dato’ Ahmad Zaharul together with directors Syed Fakrurrozi Syed Agil and Muhamad Azli Said, eGG Network Edward Ng, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Chief Executive Officer Surina Shukri and Olympic Council of Malaysia president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

Sedania founder and Group Managing Director Datuk Azrin commented, “The eGG Network’s strengths not only lie in the fact that it has the biggest esports channel in the Southeast Asian region but the channel’s ability to tell stories that are compelling and inspirational as well as evoke interest for the sport. eGG crafts various documentaries related to the sport and the individual games, which truly makes them stand out.”

Beginning its global roll-out in early 2020 across 16 countries covering Asia, Europe, and the Americas, Singapore-based ESPL is a new esports network that will focus on community and digital interactivity. By adopting a scalable licensing partnership model, ESPL can work with experienced tournament organizers in every country ESPL plans to enter, offering an integrated and open ecosystem for tournaments, media, brands, publishers, teams, and players. ESPL will also work alongside game-publishers who share the vision of promoting healthy and competitive gaming events across markets worldwide.

The first ESPL season is planned to run from February to December 2020, with official details about the tournament rules and locations to be announced soon.

ESPL was co-founded by ASX-listed iCandy Interactive Limited (ASX:ICI), Michael Broda, and Malaysia-listed Sedania Innovator Berhad. Michael Broda is the former CEO of eSports.com Group AG, while Sedania Innovator Berhad is a software and technology solutions company publicly traded on Malaysia’s sole stock exchange, Bursa Malaysia. ESPL has also enlisted several leading esports executives to accelerate its global roll-out, with additional details to follow in future announcements.

Are Gaming Chairs More Comfortable than Office Chairs?

In today’s era, there are countless numbers of PC games that can make you sit in front of computers for several hours without even a single break. However, regardless of your expertise level, you can’t deny the fact spending long hours daily while sitting can lead to various health issues, including some chronic cardiovascular diseases as well. Here is where an ergonomic chair comes into play.

An ergonomic chair allows you to make various adjustments to support your full body and reduce the damage that occurred due to sitting for long hours. However, a few questions strike our mind – both gaming chairs and office chairs are designed ergonomically, what is the difference between an office chair and a gaming chair? In the perennial battle of office chair vs gaming chair, which chair should a gamer buy? If you also want to know the answer, keep reading!

Are gaming chairs more comfortable than office chairs?

The comfort of a chair depends on two factors – seat type and material. Gaming chairs come with a bucket seat design, where the two sides are raised. Though in a moving vehicle, it supports the driver, during gaming, you’re going to be still. With the two raised sides, there will be some restrictions in your mobility and seating space. On the other hand, office chairs come with a contoured seat and won’t restrict your body movement.

From this, we can say that when it comes to comfort, nothing can beat office chairs. But it does not mean that gaming chairs are not comfortable. The choice of material used in gaming chairs enhances the comfort level. Most of the gaming chairs are made up of PU or real leather and feature more cushioning as compared to office chairs, which offers the user the utmost comfort.

What makes gaming chairs better for gamers?

Gaming chairs and office chairs are designed for those who sit for long hours at a desk, but if you use office chairs for gaming or gaming chairs for office purposes, you may not get the desired results. The primary reasons behind it are:

  • Design:A gaming chair is designed by keeping the looks at the top of the priority list. The design of almost all gaming chairs is inspired by racing themes of popular video games and available in various colors with many built-in features, including integrated speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, etc. On the other hand, office chairs are designed to offer the utmost comfort. Hence, they have a less striking appearance and come in more subtle colors. However, they don’t have in-built features like gaming chairs.
  • Adjustability:It is a fact that gamers need to find a comfortable position and respond quickly in order to get better control over their game, but those who use computers just for typing activities may not need this level of responsiveness. Hence, when it comes adjustability, gaming chairs have more options as compared to office chairs. Usually, mid-range office chairs only allow you to adjust the height and tilt, whereas gaming chairs allow you to adjust the armrest, footrest, headrest along with height and tilt.
  • Price:Though the price difference of a gaming chair and an office chair is not much, gaming chairs are expensive as compared to office chairs. However, the features and adjustability options that come with gaming chairs make their price worthy. Hence, if you are on a tight budget, you can opt for an office chair, or if budget is not a constraint, you can opt for a gaming chair.

Final Words

While these are a few differences between a gaming chair and an office chair, there are many more such as gaming chairs have winged backrest, whereas office chairs have a wingless backrest; gaming chairs have raised seat edge, and office chairs have waterfall shaped seat edge, etc. Both chairs have their pros and cons, which one you choose, it all depends on your needs and budget. However, don’t forget to make research and list down the thing you want in your gaming chair. We hope you found this information helpful in the selection of your next chair. Video of the Month — Expo Floor Views and Interviews at PAX AUS 2019

0

While not everyone can attend a PAX show down under, this year’s video games-focused extravaganza held on October 11-13 in Melbourne, Australia was reported to be the biggest ever — with over 80,000 attendees checking out PAX AUS 2019.

To get a sense of the energy, of what was shown, and a little about what it might have been like to be in the hubbub of it all, we’re doing a two-for-one post. this month, we’ve got two short video takesto share from the PAX AUS expo floor, which should give a teasing taste of the best and the meh-est from Penny Arcade’s most recent show:

On YouTube, The PopCulturists posted a walk-through of PAX AUS 2019 with their impressions a handful of the booths and games, with a couple quickie attendee interviews thrown into the 11-minute video mash-up.

ThePlayer2.net.au posted a nine minute mix (also on YouTube) of expo floor walk-through but with more on-the-spot interviews with attendees and what they saw and thought was hot (or not).

Whether you are an event coordinator, press, or general attendee, if you have an event video to share with us, please let us know and we’ll be happy to feature it!

Product Review: Gamer Goo

While attending the geek culture show, Silicon Valley Comic-Con 2019, one of the distinctively gamer-focused tables on the expo floor was for Gamer Goo.

Now this is a company I’ve seen in passing at various events in the past, but somehow I’d not stopped long enough to learn more about this product before. Did I perhaps think Gamer Goo was silly, gimmicky, or not something I’d try? The product name has always been, well, memorable, at least.

Whatever the case may be, this time I decided to see if Gamer Goo lives up to its basic premise of helping gamer keeps their hands dry during intense gaming sessions.

Bottle of Teakwood Gamer Goo
Bottle of Teakwood Gamer Goo (image credit: E4G)

What is it?

My sample of Gamer Goo is of the familiar (in terms of body wash or anti-perspirant) teakwood persuasion.

Helpfully, the Gamer Goo container comes in 2 ounce sizes, so it will travel in carry-ons on US flights, which limits liquids in containers to 3.4 ounces.

Does it work?

I applied about a quarter-sized dollop on my hands while playing a game on a laptop and diving into an intense 16-bit retrogaming session with a joypad and then to play a couple PC games using a mouse and laptop keyboard. At first, there’s a resinous, oily look and feel and teakwood scent. After the application is rubbed in, the oily feel dries and the scent mostly disappears. Over the course of almost three hours, my hands stayed dry and didn’t slip from any surface I was using while playing games. Gamer Goo promises dry hands for up to four hours. I didn’t stress test it to its advertised limit, but I’m satisfied with the effectiveness for the duration I was playing games.

Summary

If you experience sweat-induced slipperiness while putting your mouse, keyboard keys, joysticks, joypads, and so on through the paces while playing games, Gamer Goo works. It’s $12.95 through the company’s official storefront. which is not much pricier than a quality moisturizer. Granted, you may endure some ribbing from your friends for using it, but you just might get the last laugh when you’re playing with a better grip than they are on your gaming interfaces(including when you’re traveling).

With Big Expectations and Controversy, BlizzCon 2019 Opening Ceremonies Set to Open

0

It was about a year ago, at BlizzCon 2018, when Activision-Blizzard was dealt a challenge to public relations, when the mobile-only Diablo Immortal was announced — apparently at the expense to other franchises and sequels hardcore fans had wanted to see. Blizzard likely hoped to bide their time until Blizzcon 2019 to give fans what they want to see. BlizzCon is hosted this year in Anaheim, California from November 1-2. In the last couple weeks, leaks suggest that announcements around Diablo 4, Overwatch 2 and more will be revealed.

Great news for a lot of fans who’ve been waiting years for this kind of thing, right? Yes, but … that would be overlooking a lot of what has happened in the past year in and around Santa Monica, California-based Activision-Blizzard, especially the past few months:

  • Several key developers left Blizzard after a StarCraft first-person shooter and mobile game were scrapped this year (Source: PCGamesN)
  • After setting financial performance records for the 12 months prior, Activision-Blizzard laid off 800 non-game developer staff (public relations, community and customer support, etc.) in early February (Source: Polygon)
  • What is likely to be the most challenging obstacle to overcome is also the freshest wound in Blizzard’s public perception: On October 6, Ng Wai “Blitzchung” Chung, a Hong Kong-based Hearthstone player made comments in a post-game stream relating to the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. Blizzard swiftly penalized Blitzchung with a year-long ban and claiming his earnings from the tournament and even the announcers with a ban as well. Given Blizzard’s investments in China, drawing the connection was unavoidable. Even after reducing the penalties to the involved parties, fallout has continued. Politicans, game developers, and other influential voices have called out Blizzard for what they perceived as pandering to Chinese interests (Source: TIME). In the intervening weeks, there have been promises of a protest at BlizzCon. In the last two days, Mitsubishi Taiwan has dropped out as a sponsor from a Hearthstone tournament as a result of the furor around Blitzchung.

Which forces will win the tug-of-war at BlizzCon 2019? Tide-turning news about Diablo 4, Overwatch 2 and other key franchises? Or protests, community apathy or rejection of any announcements and reveals? There are few events in the games industry with this much potential for soap opera-level drama, but Blizzard’s annual celebration of their gaming properties and community is one of them this year

To watch BlizzCon 2019 opening ceremonies for free at 11 AM PST, check out Blizzard’s Twitch channel. For the full virtual experience, BlizzCon virtual tickets remain available for $49.99 to watch more content from afar and pick up in-game perks for several Blizzard games.

Classic Tetris Gets Competitive in Portland

0

Tetris is one of the all-time great games among the pantheon of classic games. Most anyone who has picked up a joystick, touched a phone screen screen, or used “WASD” on a keyboard have played Tetris, but only in recent years has the block-dropping puzzler returned to the public eye in both a familiar and competitive way. Tetris’ familiar combination of simplicity in game play and difficulty in mastery seems to have proven to be a good fit for the competitive gaming format.

History of CTWC

Taking place during October 18-20 in Portland, Oregon at the aptly named Portland Retro Gaming Festival (from October 18-20th), the 10th annual Classic Tetris World Championship (CTWC) offers up a weekend of Tetris as played on an original NES Tetris (not the Tengen edition), NES system and gamepad. This is the same set-up — not unintentionally — used in the 1990 Nintendo World Championship games competition, where Thor Aackerlund, won the Tetris match-up with strategies used to this day. Fast forward to 2009: Harry Hong, a competitive Tetris gamer, became recognized as the first person to max-out the NES Tetris score to 999,999. As other gamers also laid claim to this achievement and more visibility was brought to this achievement, the concept was born to bring together the best Tetris puzzle-masters together to compete to be the best of the best.

aGameScout summarizes the strategies and challenges involved with playing competitive Tetris, the curious origins of competitive Tetris and the CTWC, and more in this informative YouTube video:

The CTWC Tournament

In a nutshell, the CTWC qualifying round to seed a 48-spot bracket will be held on Saturday from 10AM-3:45PM (PST). Qualifying attempts will be on Type A Tetris for highest score starting on level 9 or higher. The best score attempted within that time window will potentially qualify the contender for the next round. The top 16 seeds enter the CTWC main tournament pre-qualified from placing a 700,000 or higher Tetris score at a Qualifying event.

The remaining 17-48 seeds will move on to a “Round Zero,” which follows the first-round rules, from 4:30PM-7:30PM to compete for the remaining 16 spots in the 32-person championship.

For the main event brackets, to be held on Sunday, these rounds will be dueled one-on-one in a best-of-three set of matches. Lastly, the championship will be determined in a best-of-five match. Aside from bragging rights, a $10,000 prize pool is on the line, with the winner taking $3,000.

Last year, showing the broadening audience of the Classic Tetris World Championship, teenager and first-time challenger, Joseph Saelee, toppled seven-time CTWC winner, Jonas Neubauer, with Japanese contenders Tomohiro “Greentea” Tatejima and Koji “Koryan” Nishio finishing third and fourth respectively. Given the ground-breaking tournament results from last year’s CTWC tournament, it will be tough to imagine a more interesting scenario for the 2019 tournament, but community interest is likely to be there as the competition plays out over the weekend.

If the present-day hype of watching this competition live is what Tetris’es your puzzler-loving heart, you may want to follow along with the 2019 Classic Tetris World Championship experience, The official Twitch channel, which will livestream the action, is below:

Video of the Month — John Carmack’s Keynote at Oculus Connect 6

While the news from the first day’s keynote at the Oculus Connect events — with the announcements, teasers, and features — makes most of the headlines, one of the attendee favorite talks at Facebook’s virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) developer ecosystem conference is Oculus CTO John Carmack’s second day keynote.

In this keynote from Oculus Connect 6, Carmack’s stream of consciousness-style of delivery about the company’s development of virtual reality is often surprising, insightful and more bold and blunt than most keynote addresses, with plenty of tidbits and takeaways for software and hardware developers in VR.

To view the entire keynote, the official video (and other talks from the Oculus Connect 6 show) is below:
