PAX East, WWDC, and AGDQ Events Go Digital in 2021

While Events for Gamers has started keeping track of events in and around games and related technology that will be going live in the second half of 2021, there are many event organizers choosing to play it safe for 2021, especially for the next few months. This week, like dominoes, several influential and impactful events have been canceled or confirmed as online-online. We’ll summarize the events announced since the start of the week:

PAX East:

Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East organizers have decided to cancel PAX East this year (even with a date that was bumped to the mid-year) in favor of hosting in-person PAX West and Unplugged closer to the end of 2021. Expect, instead, an PAX Online to be hosted in July 15-19, according to a statement from the organizers.

WWDC:

While Apple made no official commitments about returning to either an online or physical event format for 2021 for its Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple officially committed to an online and free event for June 7-11, 2021. At this event, keep an eye out for new hardware and software announcements, some of which could certainly be of interest to gamers (especially those with Apple devices).

Take a look at Apple’s blog post for a few more details about their WWDC event.

SGDQ:

Last but not least (especially as this particular event is all about speed, after all), the organizers of the charity fundraising-focused speedrunners event, Summer Games Done Quick, that they’re going with an all-digital format for their event this year, which will be hosted from July 4-11.

List of Live 2021 Game Events

Events for Gamers has chronicled the conversion of events to digital that started just over a year ago as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe. In terms of safety, business climate and regulations, conditions are gradually improving, in some places more than others. Some event organizers have officially announced that they’re returning to hybrid or live status.

This list will keep tabs of some of the bigger (as in regional, national or international) events that Events for Gamers follows, if or when status announcements are made for live or hybrid status, from mid-year to the end of 2021. If you’re interested in the online-accessible talks, demos, etc. offerings from each event, each of the events will offer digital content access options as well, which the organizers will clarify as the events get closer to their launch dates.

We’re hopeful that by 2022 a special list will not be necessary to highlight an event being live, rather that they will return to more of a norm than an exception.

How Will NVIDIA’s GTC 2021 Event Address Games Tech?

Ever since the launch of their exceedingly popular RTX 30 series GPUs last September, NVIDIA has had its hands full keeping up with demand. For that reason alone, it’s hard to imagine the Santa Clara, CA-based tech giant would have a fresh round of gaming-centered hardware to announce at the company upcoming GPU Technology Conference (GTC) this year. And given the news and announcements leading up to the show, it seems games-related news and content will take a backseat this year.

In NVIDIA’s announcements leading up to GTC 2021, the focus is on accelerated computing and artificial intelligence (AI), The keynote from NVIDIA’s CEO and founder Jensen Huang is going to focus on sharing “the company’s vision for computing that scales from the edge to the data center to the cloud.” Under the keynote, scientists focused on AI who will be speaking have the spotlight, followed by a parade of other industry luminaries across a wide range of fields.

Some of the highlighted speakers speaking at GTC 2021, from the conference homepage (Image: E4G)

Data science, AI, and accelerated computing — while important in so many technologies and can also absolutely affect the performance and capability of games — aren’t necessarily centered on game development and optimization.

AI is at a tipping point where it can help games offer more realistic non-player characters (NPCs), enemies that can learn from and adapt to your play style, language processing, and many other aspects that can make games feel more real and believable. This recent story from GamesRadar+ delves deep into the future of AI in games. So, the key topics at GTC may be of interest to game developers, given the potential that AI has.

But if you want to find games content at the GTC website without having to sift for the potential value, you have to dig a little bit to land on the topic of gaming, which is nested under “Explore Other Conference Topics” in another section. There are still plenty of game development and related topics — and with 1,400 talks planned for GTC 2021, a lot of territory can be covered.

For games, NVIDIA’s offering getting started with ray tracing in game development, using NVIDIA tools to optimize games, and content creation in Omniverse, a multi-GPU, real-time simulation, and collaboration platform.

Here’s a few of the featured speakers and talks NVIDIA’s highlighted in the games category:

  • Creating A Next Generation 3D Workflow | Amy Bunszel, EVP, Autodesk
  • Bringing Sniper Elite 4 to Nintendo Switch | Arden Aspinall, Studio Head, Rebellion North
  • The Next Level of Optimization Advice with Nsight Graphics: GPU Trace | Dana Elifaz, Team Lead Manager – GPU Trace, NVIDIA
  • Ray Tracing in One Weekend | Peter Shirley, Distinguished Scientist, NVIDIA |
  • RTXDI: Details on Achieving Real-time Performance | Chris Wyman, Principal Research Scientist, NVIDIA

NVIDIA’s GTC will be hosted digitally from April 12-16, with conference passes offered free. To get more info, drop on in at the GTC website.

Video Games Live Returns to the Stage in Texas This Weekend

0

Many events in the game industry may be returning to a live (as in physical, not virtual) sometime this year. Penny Arcade Australia announced a return to a physical event in October. Gamescom has announced a return in August as a hybrid event. Some events, like E3 and Game Developers Conference (GDC), are spending 2021 in the digital format. Many other event organizers who have not yet made any announcements about their respective events are playing their cards close to their chest whether their events will be live, hybrid, or virtual.

So it might be considered an outlier to the “wait and see” or “later this year we’ll be hybrid or live” approach when an event organizer announces a live event this weekend in Texas.

In this case, Video Games Live has announced a live/in-person concert, along with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, in Lubbock, Texas on March 27. Video Games Live is a producer of a series of splashy, immersive concerts focused on video game music that usually perform around the world, at least in the before times.

Note that the Texas state government has lifted its mask mandate and opened all business and facility capacity to 100% in early March. By contrast with the potential allowances, the organizers stated the orchestra will be performing at 6 feet apart from each other, and attendees will also be required to be socially distanced as well. The venue capacity will be capped at 30%. Whether or not masks will be required wasn’t specified in the announcement.

Video Games Live concert
Video Games Live concerts usually bring in big audiences in big venues (Image: Video Games Live)

So, the concert can be expected to be a scaled-back, more careful experience from it’s glory days. It’s already an interesting and important process to see how event organizers adjust as they attempt to find their footing as the new normal emerges. How this concert goes could be considered a bellwether on future events like this one (and others).

Will folks feel safe enough, while we are (slowly) getting out of a pandemic, to attend this concert? Will there be enough precautions to fully mitigate infection risk? That’s certainly up in the air. We’ll follow this concert, and we’ll see how it plays out.

Video of the Month — Intel’s Big Picture View of Games at the GDC Showcase

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) Showcase recently took place online last week. Already, some of the videos from this week-long “GDC Lite” event are available on-demand. One of the event’s platinum sponsors, the tech giant Intel, who is no stranger to gaming, has wasted little time sharing out their videos from the Showcase on YouTube.

In the video titled “Billions of Gamers Thousands of Needs Millions of Opportunities,” Intel’s Roger Chandler, VP/GM Client XPU Products and Solutions at Intel, MCed this almost-45 minute video taking an overview tour (from an Intel-centric point of view, as one might expect) of where gamers and game developers stand in the world of games after a world of disruption, evolution and other changes.

The video mixes up brief pitches about new gaming-centered products, like intel’s 11th generation Rocket Lake-S desktop CPUs, conversations with development partners like Hitman III‘s IO Interactive and Rome: Total War Remastered‘s publisher, Sega, and Tripwire interactive’s Chivalry II.

Intel expanded beyond metrics and marketing touchpoints, addressing some of the perspectives on the different reasons that motivate people to game. Jamie Sherman, PhD, Cultural Anthropologist, Research and Experience Design Team, Intel, touched on some research from their global studies about this topic to better understand games, gamers, and gaming. Instead of delving into the details of the research, the focus was on a few of the stories that drove the touchpoints of this presentation.

Among some of the stories, though, that’s mentioned in this video was the discussion of toxicity in online gaming, especially when some engagements between gamers can turn ugly. At GDC 2019, noted Roger Chandler, Intel discussed a proof of concept with Spirit AI that pairs their AI-powered toxicity detection with Intel’s hardware accelerated AI speech detection to address this issue. Fast forward two years, and Intel announced that this concept has advanced to become the launch of their (currently in beta) Bleep software. Bleep is apparently designed to work on latest-gen Intel hardware desktops and platforms. The purpose of this software is to AI capabilities to detect and filter out unwanted speech from in-game chat and other audio applications. Bleep will be available sometime this year.

After summing up some of the the tools and services Intel offers game developers, Roger Chandler teased with “a somewhat cryptic video” about Intel’s Xe HPG, which represents Intel’s move into the discrete graphics space (with AMD and NVIDIA).

gamescom 2021 Planned as a Hybrid Event

With its purely digital concept, gamescom was able to celebrate immense success in 2020. Nevertheless, both the exhibitors as well as the visitors agree: In addition to the digital aspects, the possibility of trying out the latest games on-site and diving into the gaming world form an integral part of gamescom. This is why gamescom 2021 is going to be staged as a hybrid event and thus unite the best of both worlds, physical and digital.

The hybrid concept of gamescom 2021 encompasses the following physical and digital contents and formats:

  • An entertainment area especially designed for a reduced amount of on-site visitors, which focuses on the testing of new games live on-site including a digital queue management system
  • a further developed gamescom now as a central meeting point on the web for gaming fans from all over the globe
  • gamescom shows familiar from previous years such as the gamescom: Opening Night Live or the gamescom studio
  • An event arena that offers space for special programme items such as eSport competitions or cosplay shows
  • A business area expanded to include Hall 11 in order to offer as many trade visitors optimal networking conditions also in 2021
  • A first ever online B2B platform called “gamescom biz” that is based on the already tried and tested DMEXCO @home concept, which in addition to corporate and product presentations also offers lead tracking as well as extensive networking and matchmaking functions

The devcom and the gamescom congress are also planned both on-site and with digital elements in 2021. The developer conference devcom will once again offer a wide range of options for game developers on the topics game development, tech & tools, art & animation and diversity. The gamescom congress on the other hand serves as a think tank for digitalisation far beyond the games industry and addresses creative artists, teachers, politicians, scientists, journalists and industry representatives from all sectors.

Felix Falk, Managing Director of game – the Association of the German Games Industry e.V. and co-organiser of gamescom stated: “In late summer, we are striving to make an on-site gamescom event possible for the gaming fans again at last. We will hereby be placing a focus on the superfans and the on-site testing of the latest games this year. At the same time, gamescom 2021 will once again reach millions of people worldwide as a result of the further developed digital offers. The results of the community surveys confirm this concept, which we have developed in close cooperation with many of the most important exhibitors. Without doubt, the preparations for all people involved will be much more demanding than usual in the light of this special situation. But the enthusiasm of the gaming community definitely makes these efforts worthwhile!”

Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse: “Our aim is to offer the gaming fans on-site in Cologne and online all over the world a highly attractive platform and we are working flat out to achieve precisely that this year too. I am confident that we will be able to offer the visitors as well as the exhibitors of gamescom 2021 a safe and eventful trade fair experience with our safety concept, #B-SAFE4business that has already been tested at smaller events. At the same time, we will make use of the experiences we gained in the course of gamescom 2020 and other trade fairs such as the DMEXCO @home to effectively bring the fans, trade visitors and exhibitors together online for gamescom 2021. Because one thing is clear: Hybrid events will shape the future.”

Interested companies can present themselves in the listed formats at gamescom 2021 in both physical and digital form. Details on the participation options can be found on the following website:

https://www.gamescom.global/benefits-hybrid-concept

Due to the safety concept and the resulting focus on gameplay stations, not all of the former exhibitors will be allowed to participate. Furthermore, the number of tickets available for gamescom 2021 will be significantly reduced. The start of the ticket sales is planned for May 2021.

Community wants a hybrid gamescom

Via a survey, Koelnmesse and game established that the community wants a hybrid gamescom. How strongly the fans are interested in physical components of gamescom 2021 became particularly clear:

  • 92 percent of the respondents can “hardly wait to experience gamescom on-site again”
  • 88 percent of the respondents would “feel safe at a gamescom in Cologne if good protective and hygiene measures are implemented”
  • For 76 percent of the respondents “the best way of trying out new games is simply on-site at gamescom”

Safe at the fair grounds with #B-SAFE4business

In order to make the trade fair experience during the Corona pandemic as safe and successful as possible, Koelnmesse has developed a host of measures in accordance with the provisions of the corona protection ordinance of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and in close coordination with the authorities in Cologne. These measures work together seamlessly and regulate the interaction at the fair grounds. These measures entail among others hygiene and distancing rules, regulations on stand construction as well as solutions that ensure a safe everyday trade fair routine such as digital management at the stands for instance.

Further information on #B-SAFE4business can be found on the following website: https://www.gamescom.global/besafe

Should pandemic-related developments make it impossible to stage an on-site event, gamescom will be held as a purely digital format again.

SURREAL launches the virtual event platform for live experiences across any industry

0

March 10, 2021: SURREAL Events—a virtual experience production company with offices in Chicago, Atlanta and Portland—has launched SURREAL, a web-based, 3D virtual environment where audiences can experience fully customizable and unparalleled events. 100% browser-based and pixel-streamed from the Cloud, SURREAL can scale from 50 to 50,000 participants for real-time, interactive events.

Conceived in 2020, SURREAL was aggressively developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has decimated the live event and trade show industry. A best-in-class virtual Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) for intuitive, immersive events, SURREAL provides clients with a strategy for hybrid events that integrates both physical to virtual experiences. SURRGEAL was built with Unreal Engine, the same revolutionary gaming engine behind Epic Games’ Fortnite and Disney’s The Mandalorian. This not only enables realistic, real-time 3D rendering but allows SURREAL to be configured into any environment—real or imagined—to fit the needs of clients and event organizers.

“SURREAL complements physical events without the traditional limitations of IRL, such as cost, carbon footprint or physical location,” said Josh Rush, Co-Founder and CEO of SURREAL. “While face-to-face communication is lasting and impactful, virtual connections are equally as powerful and important—and can seamlessly extend experiences by removing the limitations of time or location in the form of a preview, post-party or exclusive VIP offering.”

SURREAL serves clients and audiences across any industry:

● Corporations & Organizations (conferences, trade shows, meetings, virtual offices)
● Education (from high school to higher learning)
● Music (festivals, tours, concerts, arena shows & venues)
● Film & Television (broadcast, red carpet events, premieres & promotions)
● Arts & Humanities (openings & exhibits)
● Sports & Athletics (eSports, leagues/teams & venues)

From tradeshows and conferences, sporting events and fan engagements, SURREAL is not here to replace real life but offers an enhancement of what is possible. In addition, the SURREAL platform’s key features include:

● Customizable “Real” Venues: create an event from pre-built venue templates, or design an entirely bespoke world.
● Personalized Avatar Creator: select from pre-built templates or create a custom digital twin.
● Intuitive Navigation: easily locomote around the space via computer mouse, teleport
function or WASD / arrow keys.
● Social-First Interactions: communicate organically via video, voice or text tools anywhere on the platform.
● Presentation Tools: Run slides, websites, streamed or pre-recorded video using
easy-to-use presentation tools.

In order to enhance the lifelike quality of the avatar creator, SURREAL recently partnered with DNABLOCK, one of the world’s leading platforms for creating bespoke, photorealistic 3D avatars and cinema-quality animated content. This partnership will enable clients and attendees to create high-definition, custom avatars that mirror facial and physical features. By enabling avatars to be mapped to a simple photo upload through DNABLOCK’s avatar API, SURREAL is taking its social-first approach to the next level by creating a true digital identity for users that does not exist on any other platform.
