San Jose, Calif. – July 19, 2022 – SiliCon with Adam Savage, Silicon Valley’s largest Comic Con and Maker Con, has announced an expanded lineup of immersive, hands-on Maker opportunities in its large, dedicated Savage MakerVerse makerspace in the exhibit hall and new, reduced-priced family packages that deliver a weekend of inspiration, engagement and entertainment – all at a great value.
“Fostering a love of learning, making and reaching for the stars is at the heart of our family-friendly SiliCon with Adam Savage Comic Con and Maker Con,” said Adam Savage, Creative Director and SiliCon 2022 co-producer, special effects designer and fabricator, actor, educator, and television personality/producer, including the host of Tested and former co-host of Discovery’s Mythbusters series. “We are bringing together the very best makers in the world to inspire the makers of the future and encourage their inner talent and creativity while giving them the freedom to entertain themselves for hours on end in our large Savage MakerVerse.”
Hands-On Maker Opportunities
With Adam Savage at the helm as Creative Director and a dedicated 4,500 square foot makerspace on the show floor, SiliCon stands out from the rest as the “Maker’s Con.” The Savage MakerVerse will be buzzing with activities for makers of all ages and experience levels! Attendees can work on projects alongside other makers from around the country and get hands-on with new tools and materials at the surrounding booths. Learn from the pros through a series of demos and panels on the Maker Stage.
This year’s SiliCon features a tremendous variety of workshops and instructions for a fun-filled weekend of speed-build challenges, skill-building maker workshops, and cosplay design contests. Most activities are free to join.
The Savage MakerVerse space includes:
MakerVerse Workstations: The center of the MakerVerse will host a dozen work tables (120-person capacity) and all the supplies needed to build along with the pros or create something totally unique in a shared workshop setting. Visitors will have access to a variety of tools and materials, including plenty of EVA foam, felt, string, paint, glue, cutting tools, and wearable electronics. Free and fun for all ages!
Maker Stage: Attendees can meet and learn from the pros, including some maker heroes, through a series of project demonstrations and discussion panels on the Maker Stage, such as Blockbuster Effects for Indie Filmmakers; Greeblies, Kit-Bashing, and Dumpster Diving; or step inside an 80s video game and play real-life Punch-Out. All Maker Stage presentations are free and family-friendly!
Speed Build Challenges: Makers can test their design chops with a build challenge focused on a single material: Day 1 – armature wire, Day 2 – cardboard. Contestants will be provided with a limited kit of tools and materials to make something from scratch while they race the clock and their opponents! Each winner will receive a prize pack from SiliCon sponsors. The challenges are also free and fun for families, teams, or individual makers. Registration is required.
Cosplay Design Contest: “Create the Improbable” Costume Mashup: Cosplayers can flex those DIY cosplay skills and break out their best puns! Contestants will be provided with a full kit of tools and materials and have two days to design and build a unique – and hilarious – cosplay mashup piece. Those who think outside the box and impress the panel of pro-cosplay judges might just take home one of three spectacular prize packs, awarded on the Maker Stage. Participation is free and geared towards teens and adults. Registration is required.
Mystery Box Make-off: Attendees can cheer on their favorite makers in this game show-style challenge as they face off and race the clock. Each contestant will receive a mystery box and will be tasked with building a costume piece using only – and all of – the contents. Join us at the Maker Stage for laughs and learning as we watch pro makers hack together something wacky at top speed! Many will enter, only one can win. Free to watch and family-friendly!
Hands-on Maker Workshops: Makers can try out new tools and techniques in a series of intensive, skill-building workshops hosted by some of the most talented makers in the country. Some of the hands-on opportunities include building Cyberpunk Goggles with pre-cut foam pattern pieces or disguising an inexpensive starter object to make a Cyberpunk Headset. Some may want to take foamsmithing to the next level with a workshop on texturing EVA foam or get messy and perfect their own foam finishing at Sand Camp! Workshops are geared towards teens and adults. Registration and additional materials fees are required.
Cosplay Construction + Repair Booth: Wardrobe malfunctions and prop upgrade challenges happen. Cosplayers can stop by the Cosplay Construction + Repair booth for costume troubleshooting needs, plus the tools and materials to make those modifications on the fly. Expert staff from official sponsor Blick Art Materials (booth #512) and the pros at SKS Props will be on hand to help. Other pro maker guests will drop in at scheduled times throughout the weekend. Free and family-friendly!
Maker Museum: SiliCon’s pro maker guests collectively have hundreds of years of industry experience between them – and with credits such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, the Marvel Universe, Make Magazine, Hackaday, and even the National Air and Space Museum, they have a lot to share! We haven’t seen a Blizzcon celebration of their games and community since 2019. BlizzCon 2020 was canceled due to health concerned raised by the COVID-19 pandemic after it was already announced in full. Then in 2021, Blizzard Entertainment’s serious controversy forced the cancelation of BlizzCon 2021. Event troubles continued even into this year with their virtual event canceled.
Fortunately, we’ve got some good news for fans looking a bit ahead. A regular game critic from LA Times, Todd Martens, wrote a piece that broke the news about a possible BlizzCon return to the stage in 2023. Mike Ybarra from Blizzard Entertainment chats with him, “We previously announced we’re taking a pause on BlizzCon while we reimagine it for the future but do want to return to a live event that enables us to celebrate the community,” Ybarra says.” We recently hired a new leader of BlizzCon, April McKee, who is hard at work on that plan. … We are committed to bringing back BlizzCon in 2023.”
Mike and his (somewhat new now) team have been working hard to change the perspective of recent company culture. As industry veterans ourselves, that change will take time. Is it enough time to smooth over relations with the most important asset they have (their community) by the 2023 event? We’ll see.
We here at Events for Gamers follow all event news with interest. As we hear more about BlizzCon 2023 in the months ahead, be sure to keep watch on our channels for the latest news available, including when tickets for 2023’s event may become available.
What do you hope to see announced at the next BlizzCon? Let us know what you’re looking for, whether it’s about Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, their plethora of mobile games in development, or anything else you might like to see from this gaming giant!
Tallinn, Estonia, 28.06.2022 – The Game Wave Festival is an international event taking place for the second year in a row from September 27th to October 2nd in Tallinn, Estonia at Tallink Spa & Conference Hotel. The first three days of six-day-event are dedicated to the game jam.
The Game Wave Festival is a business, education and entertainment event for the gaming industry professionals. It first took place with great success in September 2021 in Jūrmala, Latvia attracting participants from 25 countries.
“Game Wave Festival is an expressive way to celebrate glorious game development heritage, culture and traditions, meet new and old faces, and have fun. It is professional, oriented to have serious business talks, and cozy, to make friends with almost all attendees. I am happy to welcome all of you to the 2nd Game Wave Festival!” — Ints Viksna, Chairman of Board at Latvian Technological center.
The festival is mainly B2B, however, it is designed to avoid the “stiffness” these types of events sometimes have. Game Wave Festival attempts to capture the fun and relaxed ambiance we’ve experienced in other global and regional game events. GWF is large enough to get an overview of the main tendencies in the Nordic and Baltic region, and small enough to make friends with all participants – The friendships you will make in GWF, will follow you all your life.
Main event and B2Match
30.09. – 02.10. The Main Event: Conference, workshops, expo, pitching competitions, business meetings and game jam final presentation.
The conference and interactive events are divided into 5 tracks: General, Art (visual, audial, haptics), Unreal Engine, XR and Board Games.
The online matchmaking platform is available for all participants all 6 days, and the meetings can also be booked on-site. Registered members of the matchmaking will be able to participate both on-site and online.
GWF uses the B2Match meeting and event management platform that works both on web browsers and mobile devices. This platform also handles video calls and conference streaming, so all functionality needed by the participants is neatly in one place.
There will be a private Business area for business ticket holders in Tallink’s Fidel Bar with a nice view of the old town.
The first three days of the six-day-event are dedicated to the game jam Awesome game jam runs from September 27th to 29th. The game jam’s theme and diversifiers of the jam will be decided by the jam sponsors. However, the game jam does not end on the 3rd day, instead, the final ceremony is on the 6th day of GWF. This is by design so that the teams can improve their games by attending workshops and even pitch them in and get feedback in our “Early stage games mentor pitch”.
Three unique game pitching opportunities:
1 to 1 board games author and publisher pitch in a private, closed space, where publishers can take their time to test the game and converse with the authors.
Early stage mentor pitch for anyone not ready for any other pitches, but still willing to train, test their prototype and get feedback. Jammers are welcome.
Nordic Game Discovery Contest Baltic semi-finals where developers from Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania can showcase their games to publishers and industry experts and compete for a place in the finals.
Three special event parties, including Business Afterparty and Pool party
The Business Party (29.09.2022) will be available for organizers, speakers, partners and business ticket holders only.
The Pool party (30.09.2022) will be available for organizers, speakers, partners, business ticket holders only and pool party ticket holders. There will be access to the pool area, sauna, hot tubs and a quieter area by the bar.
The Afterparty (01.10.2022) will be available for almost everyone (except for student ticket holders). It will feature Marioke, a feast table and a quieter area for business conversations.
The 3 day expo for game companies, art, technology & education The expo will be of interest to anyone who has a professional or a hobby curiosity about topics related to game companies, art, technology and education. Learning from last year’s success and good feedback, GWF will place staff members to guard the hall, so that the expo participants are not tied down at their booths for 3 days.
