Video of the Month — Games and the Open Metaverse: Neal Stephenson Keynote at D.I.C.E. Summit 2023

With Snow Crash author Neal Stephenson announced as a speaker at the upcoming Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2023 conference, this seemed like the right occasion to take a look back at another recent occasion where the influential science fiction writer and metaverse blockchain co-founder had spoken.

At the D.I.C.E. Summit this last February, Neal Stephenson was the opening keynote. In the 20 minute-long video, Stephenson discusses the socially consciousness and technological underpinnings behind Lamina1, the metaverse-focused blockchain network he’s helping to build.

In the video, he also acknowledges the wariness of some game developers to the “financialization” of games through blockchain, Web3, NFT and some of the other issues shaping perception in and around the volatile crypto world. But, because of the success of many games, like World of Warcraft and EVE Online (with their in-game currencies and economies) Stephenson is fundamentally bullish on game currencies that have meaningful value — a concept that he believes that can translate to the metaverse.

Watch the video to check out Neal Stephenson’s perspective in full.

Enjoyed the video? Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more videos!

Whether you are an event coordinator, press, or general attendee, if you have an event video to share with us, please let us know and we’ll be happy to feature it!

Snow Crash Author Neal Stephenson to Speak at AWE 2023

In science fiction, technologist, and futurism circles, author Neal Stephenson is someone akin to a prophet. In his influential 1992 novel, Snow Crash, Stephenson predicted the metaverse (heck, even coining the term), avatars, cryptocurrencies and some socio-political trends as well. Recently, Stephenson partnered with Bitcoin Foundation co-founder and venture capitalist Stephenson to build a blockchain, Lamina1, intended to help create the “fabric of the open metaverse.”

Given his background, both as an author about the metaverse and now helping to build its foundation, it makes perfect sense why Neal Stephenson is keynoting at the upcoming Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2023. AWE 2023 focuses on extended reality (XR), which includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), the metaverse, haptics and other overlapping technologies helping to underwrite the growth of XR.

Neal Stephenson joins about four hundred speakers, who include:

  • Peggy Johnson, CEO, Magic Leap
  • John Riccitiello, CEO, Unity Technologies
  • Hugo Swart, VP & GM, XR, Qualcomm
  • Chi Xu, CEO, Nreal
  • Shelley Peterson, Director – Principal Program Manager, Microsoft

AWE 2023 will take place May 31st to June 2nd in Santa Clara, CA. AWE 2023 organizers expect over 5,000 attendees as well as 300 global exhibitors to participate. Check out the AWE 2023 website for more information about the agenda, registration, and more.

Where Games and Security Connect at RSA Conference 2023

Like a Call of Duty player camped and waiting to snipe a vulnerable opponent, the game industry is one of the more vulnerable targets to cybersecurity hacking. The video game industry and its community is also one of the bigger targets.

According to Grand View Research, the global video game market size was valued at $195.65 billion in 2021, and from 2022 to 2030, it’s expected to continue growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of a robust 12.9%. Akamai Technologies issued a report in August 2022 that showed that games companies had more than doubled over the course of just one year, from 2021 to 2022.

Enter the RSA Conference (RSAC) 2023, which focuses on the world of cybersecurity, is taking place in San Francisco from April 24-27. Video games-related topics are included in the selection of hundreds of sessions that an attendee can pick from. Here’s a sampling of some of the sessions that game developers and professionals (who happen to be gamers) may find insightful at the RSAC show:

Engaging with metaverses and other virtual worlds requires a measure of security awareness and caution (cc0 Image: Soumil Kumar/Pexels)

Metaverse:

Metaverse worlds have been rolling out for a few years now and continue to be launched. But it’s early days for this emerging segment of online gaming worlds, so fraudsters, hackers, and other malicious actors may well be lurking in these worlds. What kind of threats are emerging and what kind of strategies might be able to deter adversarial attacks in metaverses built on avatars and manufactured identities, often attached to mercurial crypto, Web3, NFTs, and blockchain networks?

The Lunacy of Web3
Dr. Tracy Celaya Brown, Iron Mountain Data Centers (Speaker)
Ira Winkler, CYE Security (Speaker)

Look Far Afield: Metaverse Security Secrets from the Gaming Industry
Kevin Gosschalk, Arkose Labs (Speaker)

Threats Inside the Darkverse: The Shadowy Underbelly of the Metaverse
Numaan Huq, Trend Micro (Speaker)

Metaspace Race, Securing Minors in the Metaverse – from the Start
Angel Grant, F5 (Speaker)
Denise Tayloe, PRIVO (Speaker)

The Art of Metawar: Hacking & Weaponizing the Metaverse to Redefine Reality
Winn Schwartau, SchwartauHaus, LLC (Speaker)

Metaverse: Top Security & Privacy Concerns
Winn Schwartau, SchwartauHaus, LLC (Speaker)

Gamification:
“Gamification” is a term for engagement mechanics that’s been around for many years. While it may be be sometimes overused, in cybersecurity it’s an actively useful concept that can help teach cybersecurity, enhance skills, and bring in and train new talent. Discussing how games, game mechanics, and game theory, can create and improve an organization’s cybersecurity is the objective of the session.

Cloud Threat Gamification: Lessons Learned and How to Set One Up
Jon-Michael Brook, Starbucks (Speaker)
Randall Brooks, Raytheon Technologies (Speaker)

Want to Play a Game? Get Your Game On with Hacking Gamification
Joseph Carson, Delinea (Speaker)

Beyond these sessions, there are a number of tabletop exercises; red, purple, and blue team simulations, and sandboxing that take place during RSAC 2023 as well, which can give some attendees an idea how simulations and “gamification” of security exercises take place.

Events for Gamers Chats with Pocket Gamer Connects

We’ve been covering the Pocket Gamer Connects events for years now. They are an excellent way to network and discover upcoming trends in the industry. The next event in the series is coming up on May 16-17, 2023 in Seattle, so we had to speak to the team on why Pocket Gamer Connects is a great place to connect and do game business. Here is what they had to say!

Events for Gamers: What are Pocket Gamer Connects events all about? Do they include new industry trends like Web3 or even Blockchain interest?

Pocket Gamer Connects: Pocket Gamer Connects events are international conferences for the global games industry. The events are inclusive and cater to a wide range of industry players, from global corporations to indie developers seeking inspiration and new contacts. The conferences focus on numerous angles: global game publishing strategies, the process of game-making, and investment. We’ve hosted conferences in this series worldwide, from Canada to Hong Kong and from Helsinki to the Middle East.

Pocket Gamer Connects events have a genuinely international client base, with delegates from over 50 countries attending each event. The events unite delegates from across the entire ecosystem, covering all key formats from mobile, PC, and console to XR and blockchain technologies. The events comprise networking opportunities and knowledge-sharing sessions on stage, focusing on connecting attendees with the right people in the industry.

Topics on stage cover everything from creativity through production to sustainability, touching on the most exciting markets and hottest topics, including global trends, disruptive tech and brand marketing. The PG Connects series has established a reputation as a must-attend conference if you want to meet the most exciting game makers, developers, and publishers, as well as some of the world’s top investors, tools providers, platform owners, and more.

Why are the words ‘Pocket Gamer’ in the name? Do they hint at a mobile focus, or just tiny gamers in pockets ;)?

I love the idea that we are a crew of pocket-sized gamers! But the brand name comes from our first site, which is still at the centre of our content strategy.

Pocket Gamer was the first website dedicated to the mobile gaming scene, launched by us back in 2006. That was even before the iPhone App Store came along, so you can imagine the kind of games it reviewed on day one. The site was ahead of its time, and mobile games are now the most prominent sector in the games industry overall. Our Pocket Gamer brand is still the longest-running and most trusted suite of sites and activities in the mobile games space.

It now includes a consumer site, a YouTube channel, a b2b trade site, dedicated annual awards, and of course, a series of conferences. These days, the PG Connects events cover all formats from PC and VR to AI and web3. We’re the publishers of PCGamesInsider.biz and BlockchainGamer.biz after all. But mobile remains at the heart of what we do.

One of Pocket Gamer Connects’ key attributes is connecting attendees with other industry leaders. What core industry groups are present at the shows?

One of the things I love about PG events is that they unite the whole ecosystem. Unlike some conferences or summits, which are explicitly aimed at director-level leaders, or workshops aimed at programmers, or festivals aimed at students, a PG Connects conference brings everybody together. At a PG Connects conference, CEOs from the biggest firms will rub shoulders with indie game artists. Everybody is welcome. The talks and panels on stage include many businessfolk, designers, marketing experts, video creators and more. We have networking sessions for investors and our indie pitch competition, where first-timers are very welcome. We call it our games industry family.

Pocket Gamer Connects Seattle is coming up on May 16-17, 2023. Who’s speaking at the show potential attendees should know about?

All our events feature a range of speakers from across the industry and different disciplines. Our talks are always short and sharp, so there will always be a lot of people to see on stage! We also include longer panels where a few industry insiders can go more in-depth. We already have about 80 experts signed up and ready to talk at PGC Seattle.

You’ll discover Kathy Shin from Activision Blizzard King, Jon Radoff from Beamable, Leanne Loombe from Netflix Games and Matt Sharpe from Zynga, all significant companies in this space. We’ll welcome back Tim Cullings from Global Game Jam and Seattle Indies. Jason and Serena Robar from Author Digital will be there again, Carol Miu from PeopleFun, John Ozimek from Big Games Machine in the UK, and Josh Nilson from Eastside Games in Canada. Plus, there’s expert business insider Ed Fries from 1Up Ventures and speakers from investment firms CV Capital and The Games Fund. It’s going to be a great mix.

You dub this year’s Seattle event as the “AI Edition”. What Artificial Intelligence news is on the agenda?

Artificial intelligence – particularly the generative machine-learning models from the likes of OpenAI – has dominated the news cycle recently.

At PG Connects in London in January, it seemed like every panel got distracted talking about how AI would change the industry (for better or worse)! And we also had some great speakers working directly in the space, like Ludo.ai and Charisma.ai. At GDC, every informal conversation in one of the bars around the Moscone Center seemed to turn to the impact of AI at some point.

So we decided to let people know it’s a welcome topic at PG Connects Seattle. All the usual topics will still be there. We’ve got tracks dedicated to mobile marketing and building blockchain games and global games industry trends… But we’re also seeking out local studios doing exciting things with AI, and we are ringfencing time during the conference for them to share knowledge and ideas.

One of the things we’re doing new this year is putting space aside for Roundtables – these are discussion areas where the audience is invited to ask questions and share insight, distinct from the usual panels. And we’ll be using that Roundtable concept to discuss professional, ethical and creative ideas around the current state of AI.

Often events will have a series of “mini-events” built within. For instance, conferences like GDC have meetup groups. What else will the Seattle event hold?

We build in a range of side and “fringe” activities too:

Investor Connector: We have a special round of curated meetings introducing investors to developers/publishers in a series of quick speed-dating-style meetings.
Publisher SpeedMatch: Hand-picked introductions where developers meet publishers in a series of speed-dating-style curated meetings one afternoon.
The Big Indie Zone: There’s always a dedicated expo area with tables for indie game developers to show their wares to other attendees. There’ll be 20 tables in PGC Seattle.
The Very Big Indie Pitch: Indie developers are invited to pitch their in-progress projects to a panel of experts for instant feedback and a chance to win prizes.
Careers Zone: PGC Seattle will feature a day’s recruitment fair – companies with open jobs and jobseekers looking for work will mingle in a dedicated area.

There’ll be Roundtables for structured discussion throughout the event. Everyone gets free access to the MeetToMatch platform, enabling them to schedule meetings with other attendees.

Plus, of course, there’ll be a big party for all on the event’s first night – great for informal networking!

What are all the events coming up after the Seattle event concludes?

We have a lot of activity on the plan for this year. I think it’s going to be our busiest-ever year. As always, we’re thinking internationally. We have:

PG Connects Dubai (June 21-22)
PG Connects Toronto (July 19-20)
We’ll be running activities, including the Top 50 Mobile Game Makers 2023, alongside Gamescom in Cologne in August.
PG Connects Helsinki (September 12-13)

And then we’ll be revisiting Jordan in November – still being planned – and, of course, other webinars, mixers, summits and awards both in person and online throughout the year.

For college students and others looking to get into the game industry, are there any volunteer opportunities they can sign up for at the shows?

One hundred percent. We love volunteers! It’s a great way to get involved. You can be part of the team, be at the heart of a busy event, and, what’s more, gain access to all the activities, including networking with industry bigwigs, in return for helping us out on reception and in the track rooms for some of the time. (Volunteers walk away with a Pocket Gamer tour t-shirt from most of our events too, I think.) Sign up here for more details.

Where can interested attendees or followers of Pocket Gamer Connects go to keep updated on future event news (aside from Events for Gamers of course ;))?

We have a weekly events digest newsletter called the Industry Events Update, a great way to get games industry event news in your inbox.

You can sign up here:
https://www.pocketgamer.biz/events/

We recommend you bookmark PocketGamer.biz for all the best games industry news, updated about ten times a day, and includes an events section. Plus, we have Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles where you can follow us too:
https://twitter.com/pgbiz
https://www.facebook.com/PGbiz
https://www.linkedin.com/groups/144491/

What is important to remember about PG Connects conferences is that we also run media websites. So all our events are a chance to meet games journalists. We publish extension coverage from our events, including interviews with sponsors, celebrations of the leading indie games on display and more.

By the way – we also host awards, like the Mobile Games Awards (taking place in London on April 20th) and the Top 50 Mobile Games Makers List (revealed live in Cologne in August)!

Thanks for the opportunity to chat, and we look forward to seeing you at Pocket Gamer Connects Seattle!

Other efforts towards expanding access to GDC content include the Equal Opportunity Attendance Program which offered 1,000 complimentary Expo passes to GDC to applicants who were otherwise unable to attend without considerable financial assistance. This year, 700 passes were donated through the GDC scholarships program, made in partnership with more than 20 organizations dedicated to supporting and uplifting underrepresented voices in the industry. GDC provides all Independent Game Festival (IGF) finalists travel stipends and other assistance to ensure they can attend and participate in the conference, Independent Games Summit, and the IGF Awards that celebrate indie development. GDC also celebrates finalists with the annual IGF Pavilion showcase with kiosk and equipment to showcase their games to the public at no cost. IGF Award winners receive prize money for their incredible work. Other support resources include affordable onsite childcare services during GDC and a complimentary bike valet service for attendees.

GDC 2023 featured more than 1,000 speakers and 700+ sessions, workshops, roundtable discussions and networking opportunities. 330+ exhibitors were present to display their newest technologies, programs and services on the GDC Expo Floor, including industry leaders like Amazon Web Services, Adobe, Discord, Google, NEXON and more. It was also a space for attendees to play and connect with the developers behind new and exciting independent games, including the finalists from the Independent Games Festival (IGF) and the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibit that is home to games that use alternative controllers like toaster ovens, giant oversized hats and others.

“This week’s conference was focused on the in-person experience, and the incredible attendance numbers show game developers’ strong desire to connect and learn together. We’re so happy to see our friends and colleagues again in an environment that fosters these insights and relationships,” said Stephenie Hawkins, Director of Event Production for Media & Entertainment at Informa Tech. “The focus of this year’s conference was community, jobs and accessibility, and on each of those fronts, we’ve proudly introduced new ways for attendees to find their respective tribes, join the fun through any level of physical capabilities, and create a path towards great interactive experiences. Next year we hope to see our friends again as GDC returns in full force on March 18, 2024.”

The conference featured workshops and sessions led by some of the biggest names in the games and entertainment industry. Esteemed developers shared their insights into the creations of hit games including: The Last of Us, Dead Space, God of War Ragnarök, Kirby, Horizon Forbidden West and more. During GDC, major big game reveals included the first gameplay footage for The Seven Deadly Sins Origin, Counter-Strike 2 and others. Microsoft also sparked interest with the release of 12 new ID@Xbox demos available for conference attendees at the ID@Xbox Sponsored Kiosk and Razer following the announcement of their new universal Interhaptics SDK.

A centerpiece of GDC was the annual Main Stage presentation, this year titled, “The Future of Play.” The multi-part presentation focused on how the future of game development and the evolving workplace is expanding, featuring Chandana Ekanayake of Outerloop Games, Robert Anderberg of ControlZee and game industry executive Jen Oneal. The speakers discussed designing games about experiences unique to marginalized cultures, creating a healthy studio culture with a remote workforce and building a successful user-generated content (UGC) platform that benefits both players and developers.

GDC 2023 honored the top developers of the past year with the 25th annual Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards and the 23rd annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA). Notably, Cosmo D Studios’ Betrayal At Club Low won both the Independent Games Festival’s Nuovo Award, which honors titles that make the awards jurors think differently about games as a medium, and the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. Betrayal At Club Low made history as only the second title in IGF Awards history to pull off wins in those two major categories. At the Game Developers Choice Awards, Elden Ring won big, earning the trophies for Best Visual Art, Best Design and Game of the Year, while the developers of God of War Ragnarök also took home three trophies: Best Audio, Best Technology and the Audience Award. Video of the Month — State of Unreal Presentation at GDC 2023

GDC is chock-full of great panels, talks, side events, and of course plenty of networking opportunties. What many in the press will also find of great interest are the keynote speakers and presentations from big named companies like Intel, Nvidia, Unreal, Unity, and many others. From new technologies to interesting new bling bling that can be added to your gaming or production PC, these keynotes often time reveal what’s coming to the industry in the next couple of years.

Case in point, this year’s GDC 2023 State of Unreal presentation was certainly no exception to this rule. We got an exciting first look at Unreal Engine 5.2 (UE5 in general is a super promising new game engine), and several new game previews like Fortnight Chapter 4 (which also uses UE5 and a new in-game building toolset).

Have a look!
