Interview with LOGIN’s Seda Balci

Following year seven of one of the most resilient game industry conferences, LOGIN 2013 –which Events for Gamers attended — we interviewed the conference’s owner and director, Seda Balci.

We discuss her views about the success of the conference, the foundation that led to this year’s event and where this conference might be going in the next year.

Events for Gamers: Seda, thank you for taking time to share your thoughts with Events for Gamers about the 2013 LOGIN Conference and more. For those who aren’t familiar with your background, could you share with us what brought you into the events and games industry?

Seda Balci: My event management background goes back to my high school years. It started with volunteering at big events and got more professional with hosting the May Festival of my college for 4 years. Then started hosting regular happy hours and pirate cruises and finally LOGIN Conference. I am just doing what I am passionate about. I grew up playing video games. When my passion and video games combined I think that is how I ended up at LOGIN Conference.

E4G: Overall how well do you feel LOGIN 2013 went this year? What were the bars you set for LOGIN 2013’s success, and do you feel you met and surpassed them?

Seda: I am getting great feedback from everyone. Venue, speaker list, speaking topics had bigger impact on the audience compared to last year. We did spend long hours choosing the best among all awesome proposals we got and I am very happy with the results. You learn something all the time. There is no limit learning in this business. Every year it will be better and better.

E4G: Was organizing LOGIN 2013 more of a challenge, or easier, in its second year in San Francisco — at a new venue?

Seda: The first year was the biggest challenge. Moving LOGIN from Seattle to San Francisco and announcing the owner change and new location took more time and put more pressure. I can say this year was less challenging. I like new venues and I like surprises. We might end up in a surprising venue in San Francisco next year!

E4G: What were the driving themes and topics you aimed for at LOGIN 2013?

Seda: We covered many topics this year. I did not choose a specific theme actually. I can say we covered mostly mobile subjects this year but we also had online gaming, data security, even gadgets. I like variety. Everyone who attended found something interesting for them and enjoyed a lot. That was the plan.

E4G: If you could do LOGIN 2013 over again with the same venues, speakers and themes, what aspects of the conference would you change?

Seda: I would not change anything. I loved what we had and 100% happy and satisfied with the results. It is time get ready for 2014’s LOGIN.

E4G: You have a lot of putting together organizing parties and cruises before you organized LOGIN, largely for the game industry among other tech sectors. What have you learned from organizing parties that’s helped you in your second year of organizing LOGIN?

Seda: I learned many important lessons. I don’t know if pages of notes would cover everything I’ve learned so far . I had the chance to meet great event organizers who gave me precious feedback and showed me the ropes. I also met industry leaders who I had great discussions on what’s going on in the industry nowadays, insider notes, what is hot in the industry and had great notes on what topics people would like to listen to or what they definitely don’t want to hear about it. Also having all these events built great friendships, which I am very grateful for.

E4G: San Francisco is blessed, or burdened (depending on your point of view), with an abundance of conferences and summits in social, mobile, the cloud and games in general. What do you feel distinguishes LOGIN overall as a brand from the many other events in the area?

Seda: I know, right? It is a little tough not getting lost between the big ones. Might be better having a little less in San Francisco as a conference owner of course, but we are in the heart of technology and gaming here… And San Francisco is lovely, so having many of them is normal. I actually like having many here in San Francisco sometimes. There are many greatly hosted and planned ones and I make sure I don’t miss them. What I believe is, if you have good content, doesn’t matter when or where you are hosting your event, or how many other conferences or events are going on, you’ll still have the perfect audience all the time.

E4G: I understand LOGIN 2014 is already being planned for next year. Can you share any of the plans you might have for LOGIN 2014?

Seda: It is in progress already. It was in progress while hosting 2013 LOGIN. For now, I can only say I like surprises as I mentioned earlier, so there will be surprises. San Francisco will have another successful LOGIN 2014. Stay tuned 

E4G: Lastly, on the lighter side, what is your favorite part of planning a conference or an event?

Seda: I have many favorite parts actually. I like the brainstorming sessions with the speakers, which is a lot of fun. I am so lucky I had the best speakers in the world. Learned a lot from them as well  I also like doing the actual design of the conference, from floor plan to agenda, from announcement timing to after parties.

It is a lot of fun and it makes you happy at the end for sure — as long as you love what you do, like I do.

E4G: Thank you, Seda. Events for Gamers looks forward to finding out more what you have planned for LOGIN 2014!

World’s premier games festival PAX returns to Melbourne in 2014 with new venue and dates

Monday 21 October, 2013 – The world’s premier games festival, Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), will return to Melbourne in 2014 after a critically successful sold out inaugural year in 2013. Community demand will see the show move to the larger Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, to be held from 31 October to 2 November 2014.

Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher announced the highly anticipated return of PAX Australia to Melbourne and said it was a boost for Victoria’s flourishing games industry.

“PAX is the world’s leading games festival and the return of PAX Australia to Melbourne for the second consecutive year highlights Victoria’s reputation as a key hub for games development in the Asia Pacific region,” Ms Asher said.

“This year’s event in Melbourne represented the first time that PAX had been held outside of the United States – not only was it a great coup for Melbourne but the event was a runaway success.”

The 2013 show completely sold out of tickets months before the event itself, as a result, PAX Australia 2014 will move to the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre in order to increase its capacity.

Ms Asher said the Victorian Coalition Government is a major sponsor of the event and played an important role in securing PAX Australia 2013 and 2014 for Victoria.

“PAX Australia is a fantastic opportunity to show off the breadth and diversity of Victoria’s games development community,” Ms Asher said.

PAX Australia 2014 will build on the success of the 2013 event and will combine exciting international and local content with community events. International guests, speakers, musicians and developers will join local game industry representatives to showcase games and community events in Australia. PAX Australia is also supported by the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association and the Game Developers Association of Australia.

Robert Khoo, President of Penny Arcade said Melbourne has been an incredible home for PAX, and the Victorian Government has been as accommodating as the fans.

“Not only have they helped us secure a much-needed larger venue for the show, but they’ve paved the way for talented local creators to be showcased on the global stage. The games community here is incredible, and PAX Australia is here to stay,” Mr Khoo said.

PAX Australia will be held at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre from 31 October and 2 November, 2014 and will be run by ReedPOP in conjunction with Penny Arcade.

San Francisco gets ready for the Game QA & Localization Forum

Hot off the back of its world premiere in London, Gaming IQ is pleased to announce that the acclaimed & unique Game QA & Localization Forum is going to San Francisco this December.

As the world’s only forum series dedicated entirely to QA and localization for the gaming industry, the San Francisco event, taking place at the Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf on December 10-11, unites senior QA and localization professionals from all across the industry – console, PC, online, social or mobile.

http://sanfran.qalocforum.com/news

Representing a true spectrum of large AAA studios to smaller indie developers and publishers, the forum has assembled a world-class speaker line-up that includes the likes of Sony, EA, BioWare, Ubisoft, Konami, Namco Bandai, Gearbox, Disney and many others.

The Game QA & Localization Forum: San Francisco is a unique opportunity to hear from world-leading developers, indie studios and key industry solution providers in testing and localization.

The event offers the opportunity to benchmark with industry peers & competitors in an informal, senior-level setting dedicated to networking with people facing the same challenges. The event agenda is available to download here

What’s fantastic about this forum is how positively the industry has responded – everyone is excited to spend some decent time with likeminded senior professionals discussing the issues that really matter; issues that are too focused or niche to be discussed at broader industry events like GDC”, said Arran Oakes, the Head of Production at organiser Gaming IQ.

Gaming IQ are working with the IGDA on the forum, with Executive Director Kate Edwards saying “this underrepresented area of game development can shine in its own forum, and people from all functions across the game industry can improve their own work by better understanding the critical aspects of QA and Localization”. Annual memberships are available to purchase with a ticket to the forum.

The Game QA & Localization Forum: San Francisco speaker and panel highlights include:

  • Tulay McNally, Director of Studio Development QA and Quality Engineering Dep., BioWare

  • Mario Vasquez, Head of WWQA Operations, EA

  • Michele Kassis Carlson, Localization Director, Sony PlayStation

  • Tad Hirabayashi, Production Services Director, Namco Bandai

  • Michael “Gryf” Weber, Director of Central Development, Gearbox Software

  • Marietta Pashayan, Director, Mobile QA and Live Services, Disney Interactive

  • Daniel Pangelina, QA Manager, Double Fine

The Game QA & Localization Forum: San Francisco takes place in December 10-11, 2013 at the Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf Hotel, San Francisco, California. Game Audio Job Descriptions: What are companies looking for?

From GameSoundCon.com: Over the past dozen or so months, I’ve been copying down job descriptions of sound or music openings in the game industry as well as posting them to the GameSoundCon Facebook Page. In this post, I’ve pulled out the “Requirements” sections for a few and have listed them.

Just about every posting has something akin to “experience with game audio implementation”, or “knowledge of game audio and how it gets integrated into a game” or “Possess a working understanding of the technical constraints of audio design for GAMES.”

Game audio definitely begins with a great ear, great compositional skills and the ability to create great sounds using traditional DAW’s, but that’s really only the starting point. The people who are hiring are looking for something above and beyond that.

This quote from the Senior Audio Manager for Volition, discussing what goes into the hiring process, sums it up:

I see a lot of applicants applying who emphasize that they are musicians or composers. if that’s all you got, you’ll be outgunned.

..if you’ve got other skills that make you valuable, like knowing how to script… or knowing how memory and streaming work, … well, that is awesome, because that sounds like someone I might want to work with.

Impressively the system relies on no dependency or plug-ins like Java or Flash.

The new system is receiving wide scale praise and support from the HTML5 community, including Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript and Mozilla CTO. ESA Announces Second E3 College Game Competition

0

September 18, 2013 — Washington, DC — The Entertainment Software Association today announced the second edition of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 Expo) College Game Competition. The E3 College Game Competition honors the best student talent in video game development, and provides collegiate developers with a chance to display their games at E3, the world’s premier trade show for computer and video games.

Competing colleges and universities are required to submit one game, along with story details, and content assets from their playable video game, to be judged by a panel of game industry veterans and media professionals. A total of five finalists will be invited to present their game on this year’s E3 show floor.

“Last year’s collegiate game competition showcased the immense creative talent that our university system is developing for the video game industry,” said Mike Gallagher, president and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, the trade association that owns and manages E3 and represents U.S. computer and video game publishers. “ESA is proud to continue hosting the E3 College Game Competition, and its important mission of providing a spotlight for the rising game design talent that will influence the future of our industry.”

This year’s competition will target almost 400 U.S. colleges, universities, art and trade schools offering video game courses, certificates and degree programs. Last year’s competition ended in with a tie between the University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Flash Frozen and Savannah College of Art and Design’s Lost in Thought.

“The E3 College Game Competition was an amazing experience for our students. It allowed our students to get an insider’s view of the game industry and make many valuable connections within the industry,” said Diane Christie, game design and development program director at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.  “The showcase provided our students with a unique opportunity to have their game exposed to a large number of people and the feedback they received from game industry veterans and media professionals was invaluable.”

“For many years, E3 has been a legendary expo where heavyweight AAA game studios showcase their best projects. It was an honor to be a winner of its first college game competition in 2013,” said Tony Tseng, professor of interactive design and game development at Savannah College of Art and Design. “Our faculty and students were thrilled to be a part of this fascinating expo and showcase the game our students produced at SCAD. It was exciting to demo our game alongside the world’s top game development studios. The game industry is changing and the demand for indie games grows each year. By incorporating this college game competition into E3, and by bringing that indie student spirit to the expo, the ESA once again demonstrates a clear understanding of the latest trends in the industry.”

ESA will provide complete instructions to participating schools including guidelines on specific design, concept and key asset requirements.

Important competition dates:

  • Submissions will be accepted starting on March 14, 2014.
  • Final deadline for submissions is April 18, 2014.
  • Finalists will be notified on May 9, 2014.
  • The winner will be announced during E3.

Universities and colleges interested in more information on the competition rules and submission requirements should email ESA@theESA.com.
