E3 2014 will be full of a variety of game debuts

There have been a lot of rumors going around about what games will be presented at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2014. Here is a breakdown of the various companies that will presenting at the event:

Sony

Sources from DualShockers says that Sony will present “in-engine” footage mixed together with gameplay sections from Uncharted for PlayStation 4; other titles include a new title from Media Molecule, “Gran Turismo 6”, and “God of War 4” for PS4. Guerilla Games will also present a new RPG title. Sony London will present a new title, and Sony Japan Studios will unveil “Project Beast”- the spiritual successor to “Demon Souls,” and the “Last Guardian,” scheduled for launch in winter 2014.

Microsoft

A real-time-in-game trailer of “Ryse 2” with a medieval setting, will be shown at the expo. This game will most likely not be released until 2016. “Forzon Horizon 2” will most likely be announced for a October 2014 release.  A “Halo 2: Anniversary,” a remastered version of Halo 2 will be shown; this game will also include multiplayer. “Halo 5” may be announced at the expo.

Other developers, such as Nintendo, EA, and Ubisoft are going to be announcing various titles at E3 2014.

Comicpalooza 2014 In Photos

We attended Comicpalooza 2014 in downtown Houston today and walked away feeling pleased that such a large comic and cosplay convention was available in a city so far away from other convention hubs. The event was much larger than we expected. It was organized with plenty of space to make your way from the main showfloor, food areas, and panel rooms. Always a plus when you have cosplay roaming about:

Comicpalooza 2014

While fun is all around you at these kind of events, there’s also a lot to learn from what’s available at the booths. Many included a vast array of books, comics, and other reading material that drove us deep into past times reading that favorite fantasy or SCI-FI book we still have on the shelf. Art of all kinds was another major theme that included some fantastic work by both local and international artists:

Comicpalooza 2014

What else do you get at a convention when you mix Comics, Cosplay, and Cartoons? Lots of great items to buy of course! We were impressed with the wide array of t-shirts, posters, comics, statues, and many other items on sale. The most impressive booth had to be these beautiful faerie decorations by The Faerie Preservation Society. A perfect decoration for that home deep in a forest somewhere:

Along with the busy activity you get from a large showfloor with over a hundred booths showcasing t-shirts to tattoos, there were also dozens of events, including LARP (Live Action Role Playing) tournaments, conference sessions, and the usually hallway chatter from attendees waiting in line for that extra greasy slice of pizza.

PlayStation 4 leaders to look at the next 100 years of games

From VentureBeat: The key brains behind the PlayStation 4 will be the keynote speakers at this year’s Develop conference in Brighton, England.

President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House and lead PlayStation 4 system architect Mark Cerny will be there to deliver a talk called “20 Years of PlayStation, 40 Years of Console Games, and 100 Years to Come, on July 9.

“It is hard to believe it has been 20 years since the arrival of the first PlayStation,” House said to GameIndustry.biz. “Mark Cerny and I will look back over this fantastic period in which console gaming became mainstream, how our experiences shaped PlayStation 4 and where the industry will go from here.”

Cerny will also receive the Development Legend award at this year’s Develop Industry Excellence Awards.

“We learned a lot of lessons over the past 20 years which shaped the decisions taken in designing PlayStation 4,” said Cerny, who gave a revealing keynote talk at Develop last year.

The conference will be July 8 to July 10 in at the Brighton Hilton. Other speakers include Siobhan Reddy of Media Molecule, Roberta Lucca of Bossa Studios, and Stuart Saw of Twitch.

The DeanBeat: Will Neuro Games become the next revolution of the game business?

From The DeanBeat:

Neuro games are something new that can take gaming beyond the traditional violent, controller-driven game and give us wonderful user interfaces, brain-enhancing entertainment, and even fitness-improving applications. These kinds of games sound so great, but they’re being overhyped as well, considering how young the industry is.

The conference is just in its second year, but it drew more than 550 people. The industry has its own prophet and evangelist in Zach Lynch, founder of the conference and the man who wants neuro gaming to become a recognized category that combines games, brain research, sensors, and new kinds of user interfaces for computers and entertainment devices. Neuro games touch our nervous system in some way. The diverse category includes Lumosity’s brain-training games, which have been played by 60 million people; Microsoft’s Kinect body-sensing cameras; Emotiv’s brainwave-monitoring headsets; fitness games like Nintendo’s Wii Fit and Brain Age handheld titles; and even the Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles.

It might be a bit of a reach to say these one-of-a-kind games and technologies are related. But if we accept that they are, then the category is already huge. These neuro games could help gaming reach broader audiences and put the appreciation of gaming on the same level that people have for art forms like books and movies. At the same time, it’s still probably quite likely that an entrepreneur who tries to raise money for a neuro gaming project will get laughed out of the room. I don’t know if neuro games as envisioned will take off, but developments like it are critical for the reinvention of the games business, which has always been evolving.
