Deep Silver announces their game lineup for Gamescom 2014

0

Gamescom is an event where gamers from all over the world gather to view the latest games; today Deep Silver announced their game lineup for their public booth in Hall 9.1. B011/CO10. Of the games announced, their most anticipated title is Dead Island 2. From the developers who brought you Spec Ops: The Line and YAGER, Dead Island 2 is a sequel from Dead Island. For the first time German players will be able to play Dead Island 2. There will be 150 gaming stations for the PC and console.

Here are some of the other games Deep Silver will be showcasing:

Metro Redux

This game is a combination of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. The games are being built by the 4A engine for next-gen consoles and PC. Players will also experience a smooth 60 FPS gameplay and original state of the art visuals that were at one time only available on high-end PC hardware.

Risen 3: Titan Lords

German developers Piranha Bytes are developing this game; they also created the cult Gothic series. The one key feature of the Gothic series as well as the Risen series is the vivid world and the freedom to explore it. Piranha Bytes says that the world of Risen 3: Titan Lords will be diverse and full of life, providing the player with an authentic and classic RPG experience.

Sacred 3

This game is a classic arcade Hack and Slash action centered around drop-in, drop-out cooperative multiplayer for both offline (2 players) and online (4 players) play. Fan favorite characters such as Seraphim and Safiri will be back for Sacred 3. Every character will have their own unique skills and weapons which can be upgraded to match the player’s very own combat style.

Dead Island Epidemic

Dead Island Epidemic will have 3 teams of players face off against a horde of zombies. This game will be a Free-to-Play PC title with all the same elements from the Dead Island games.

Emergency 5

Emergency 5 is the newest installment of the famous Rescue Strategy series. Some of the newest features include a new graphics engine and a mighty editor tool. Gameplay features include the hottest rescue missions, leading firefighters, police and technical emergency services.

My Top 10 Observations From Casual Connect USA (SF 2014)

Reposted with permission from Margaret Wallace‘s blog. The list of points begins with a little self-promotion for her company (as a helpful introduction to her work too) and going from there:

One of the premiere conferences catering to the world of casual games, Casual Connect USA 2014, has come and gone. I know this because I was there — attending the show in San Francisco. My list of 10 observations from Casual Connect is a random mix drawn from the business, the people, the culture and the industry from the past few days at the conference.

1. Playmatics Made a Good Show for Branded IP

All self-promotion front and center, my gaming company, Playmatics, was well-represented at Casual Connect — especially in terms of all the work we’ve done with major brands. Since we’ve been in business, my company has collaborated with everyone from Red Bull, David Cronenberg for Body/Mind/Change, theAmerican Museum of Natural History, the Walking DeadBreaking Bad

Playmatics Co-Founder (Nicholas Fortugno) delivered a well-received talk entitled “Games as Brand Extension and Invention.” The lecture looked at the ways that games have been used by brands for extension of audiences worldwide. After his talk, many brand stakeholders contacted us to explore ways to work together.

I was surprised to see that we were one of the few companies to really focus on our work with brands and branded IP for the mobile and tablet gaming space.

Screenshot from "Red Bull Focus" iOS Game, released in May 2014. Playmatics works with many brands like these.

2. Speaking of Branded Mobile Games – Kim Kardashian’s Hugely Successful Mobile Game is Making Tongues (and Booties) Wag

Speaking of the power of branded IP, Glu Mobile‘s Kim Kardashian: Hollywood game is making bank and everyone at Casual Connect was talking about this booty-busting phenomenon.  Kardashian herself reportedlystands to make a cool $85+ million plus on the game — though other reports place that figure in the $40 million range. Either way, that’s a bootyload of Kardashian Kash.

For those of us (like Playmatics) who have been working on branded IP for a long time — this level of success doesn’t come as a surprise. I have spoken a lot previously on the pros and cons of incorporating brands into your content strategy.

Traditional mobile games have been having an increasingly difficult time maintaining the longevity of their original brands. Having a booty-sized boost like a Kardashian backing you up might separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of product success. This sentiment was echoed last year at a Casual Connect fireside chat with journalist Jon Gaudiosi and former EA CEO, John Riccitiello. As Venturebeat’s Dean Takahashi reported back then: “He [Riccitello] sees precious little evidence that lasting franchises are being built.”  (See full article.)

But now, for all the brand naysayers, the Kardashians have spoken. Given that far too much of the games industry is made up of followers rather than leaders, watch the branded mobile gaming space suddenly get red hot for the rest of the year and into 2015.

3. The Number of Indies Continues to Grow

A wide variety of indie game studios continue to flood the space. Indies keep an industry fresh and often lead the way for innovation and fresh thinking. At the Big IndiePitch, an event held this year at Casual Connect, The Phantom P.I. Mission Apparition took home a prize. Other winners from the Indie Prize Showcase include SF-based Lazy 8 Studios and Mechanical Butterfly Studios as well as Montreal-based Double Stallion. Great to see so much creativity in the space.

Alas, I wish more indie studios were making money, at least the good ones in any case. According to Gamepolitics, a recent Gamasutra survey reported that “57 percent of indie game developers (including both solo indies and members of indie teams) made under $500 in game sales.”  Will this change anytime soon? What do you think?

4. The Bar on All-Out Conference Parties Keeps Getting Higher (But More Party Crashers Turned Away)

And now for something completely superficial: With more people entering the space and more companies, especially all of the “ad and monetization solutions” out there, companies seemed to go to even greater extremes than ever to gain the attention of conference attendees. At Casual Connect, as with most gaming conferences, business and pleasure go hand-in-hand at conference parties. With so many providers vying for your business or your money — or both — people are upping their game in creative ways to spread the word.

Official conference party at San Francisco City Hall? Check. Party at the Ferrari Showcase Room? Check.  Need Mimosas in the Morning to kick start your day? Check. This list barely scratches the surface in terms of all the fun and trouble one can get into at the show this year.

5. The Best Networking (for Me) Happens at Speaker Dinners (& Lunches)

A sure-fire way to meet and greet wonderful people in a focused setting – often with high quality food and drink? Speaker’s dinners (etc.) can be that place. I always enjoy attending events for speakers-only because it’s almost always going to be a hand-picked group of very interesting, engaged and talented people. If you are ever a speaker at a conference or event, don’t miss out on opportunities to hang out with your fellow presenters.

This year, the Casual Connect Speaker’s Dinner was held at 54 Mint — a really great restaurant in the heart of San Francisco. The food was yummy. The people were even more delicious to meet and talk with that evening — lots of great perspectives on games. Probably the highlight of my entire conference.

6. World Conflicts Have Spilled Over Into Games

One of my favorite things about working in social and mobile gaming is the extent to which it has allowed me to meet and work with friends and colleagues from all over the world.  The gaming industry is more international than ever, something I delve into a bit more in my deck on worldwide video game statistics.  At Casual Connect, Dean Takahashi once again wrote a great piece, putting the spotlight on the impact of world events on companies located in countries affected by recent strife:

The frightening intrusion of the terrors of war and political crisis have taken a toll on Ukraine and Israel, and that was evident at the Casual Connect game conference this week in San Francisco, where more than 3,000 game makers gathered to talk about the craft and business of casual games. (Full DeanBeat article here.)

The rest of the article is a pretty comprehensive look at how individual companies are fairing with these new world realities. Even Casual Connect had to move the Eastern Europe installment of its annual conference from Kiev, Ukraine to Belgrade, Serbia. I’m glad Dean covered this situation because, up until his article, things have (on the surface) been business as usual — though we all suspected our impacted colleagues couldn’t say the same.

Belgrade, Serbia

7. An Overflowing Number of Ad, Analytics and “Monetization” Platforms

At times, it can seem pretty overwhelming to observe the shear number of platform providers hawking their goods all the time, everywhere — at shows, via email, Twitter, LinkedIn. It’s relentless. A lot of people who work in gaming with whom I spoke at Casual Connect seem to share the sentiment. We all have platform fatigue.

While so many of these companies engage in an enormous amount of outreach, it can take some work to fully understand how a particular ad platform or predictive analytics company differentiates itself from its competitors. That’s why reputation is so important for these companies. There is no better PR than existing happy customers.

This perceived imbalance between the number of these vendors vs. the number of (especially well-funded) content creators reminds me of the dynamics in place during the time of the California Gold Rush. Namely, the people who were making huge profits weren’t miners in search of their elusive treasures of gold — it was the merchants who found their treasure in selling shovels, picks, food and clothing to those miners.

8. Continued Consolidation is Inevitable

Speaking of selling shovels and picks to the miners, the market has a frothy appetite for acquisitions these days. If your company operates in the area of ads (especially mobile or video ads) or predictive analytics — you are an acquisition target so carpe diem. Hooray for you! Just think about all of the recent acquisitions in the news — Yahoo’s acquisition of FlurryOpera’s Adcolony acquisition, Unity’s recent acquisition of Applifierand Playnomics (not to be confused with Playmatics, my company) — it’s easy to understand why the mood was high for many who offer these goods and services in the space.

A snarky metaphor for industry consolidation.

A snarky metaphor for industry consolidation.

9. The North American App Ecosystem is Broken

The business of mobile and tablet gaming continues to evolve — though it’s a red ocean for most. App marketing costs have hit an all-time high. DeNA’s Barry Dorf is quoted in a recent article on a talk he gave at Casual Connect this year. To me, Dorf frames the current situation in mobile gaming very well when he states:

‘There are three top players [in mobile gaming]; there’s SupercellGungHo, andKing, and they make up 60% of the App Store top-grossing. There’s about ten companies that make up about 30% of the top-grossing, and then indies make up the other 10%. That’s changing dramatically, even today. The top 60% is growing, the top 30% is getting smaller, and we’re tapping into that 10%. It’s harder and harder for indies to break into the marketplace today.’ (Full article here.)

While the apps marketplace in North America corrects itself or implodes (and i’m an optimist), I’m personally most excited about the mobile marketplace beyond North America.  The mobile gaming market in China alone is poised to be over $3 billion – soon easily surpassing the United States. Not everyone will be able to tap into that bounty, however, as it takes time, money and know-how to do business abroad.

10. The Only Thing That is Constant is Change

Sure, for any of us who have been in gaming for any amount of time, it’s easy to spot repeating cycles — companies that are rebuilding the same wheel every few years. You’ll see successful brand re-boots like Slingo– and the same faces cycling from one company to another, year after year. Given the thriving number of entrants into the space, new channels, markets opening up — the dawn of everything ranging from e-sports to wearables, there are exciting times ahead. Even in an industry often so resistant to change – so often on the brink of cannibalizing itself — change is an inevitable and unstoppable fact of life.

Change is Inevitable

This event, which features the high sponsorship of Logitech, seeks to promote the videogame industry in Chile, to show its relevance in the national and international context, to spread technical and scientific knowledge and promote the development of new ideas and projects in the field of videogames, and in general, to celebrate the gamer culture with the Chilean community. It also has Scirra as sponsor, the creators of the popular Construct 2 engine, and the support of Unity.

The 2014 edition will be held between  August20 and 24 in the city of Santiago and consists of three different activities: the Series of Talks, Lectures and Workshops about Videogame Development; the Scientific Videogames Lab; and the already traditional Videogames Extreme Workshop.

The speakers will be both exponents of the Chilean industry as well as renowned international guests, who will deliver academical, practical and experiential information about the reality of game development in Chile, Latin America and the world.

There will also be some workshops in which participants will be able to deepen their expertise in industry matters.

International Guests

Keeping true to its traditional format, it is an open development competition, in which a total of 200 students and aspiring developers work in an uninterrupted 24-Hour session, joining teams to create a videogame prototype.

This gamejam will feature the mentoring and tutoring of 25 professionals from the various companies associated with VG Chile, with the co-production of USM Games, and the participation of a jury composed of the international guests. At the end of the event, the participants will attend a closing ceremony where the best games will be awarded in different categories.

Scientific Videogames Lab(#LABVJ2014)

logo-labcientifico-2014Between friday 22 and sunday 24 of August, a second gamejam will be held, this time it will be closed to the general public and oriented exclusively to professionals of the industry who will have to, in a 48-Hour uninterrupted session, develop a videogame or prototype, having to apply content parameters from a scientific discipline to its development, creating an experience that seeks to transmit that knowledge to the player.

As in the first edition of the event held in March 2013, the organization chooses a particular field of science and invites various members of the scientific community to join the teams of developers to provide the knowledge to be taught through the games.

Inside Intel on Intel’s Buzz Workshop Series for Game Developers

During the recent Intel Buzz Workshop for Game Developers: Be Mobile event in SF, I chatted with Robert McNair, an engineering manager and evangelist for Intel, who’s been in the industry a solid 28+ years but focused on his personal passion of video games since 2010 by enabling and optimizing gaming on PCs. He shared a few of his thoughts about the purpose of these workshops — and what’s next for them.

Any event starts with an idea, and for Intel it was no different since 2013. “If you’ve noticed over the last 5 years, we’re (Intel is) finally very comfortable addressing the gaming community with our capability. Now with Iris, you’ll see an explosion of graphics. So we are reaching out to the gaming community more than ever,” says McNair. He adds, the focus of the Buzz events is one layer removed from the gamers, by reaching out to the developers who create them.

The objective from Intel’s perspective was also relatively straightforward: to show devs how to port their games to X86 and Android platforms via Intel as the conduit. The talent pool has primarily been seated on the iOS platform but more and more developers are gradually shifting to Android as a focus, a perceived trend which Intel hopes to tap into.

It’s worth mentioning that lately another big brand name Amazon, too, is developing a more pointed approach to reaching out gamers by reaching the developers through a set of hardware and software platforms first.

This event was not intended to directly dovetail with the upcoming 2014 Intel Developer Forum, as “IDF is for developers, but also for press, biz guys, partners and marketing. (It’s) not as in-depth on the technical side,” according to McNair. However, the Buzz event did offer IDF flyers with discount codes offering Galileo hardware as a promotion to drive registration.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of news to emerge from the interview is preliminary information that Intel Buzz events will be headed abroad to London and Stockholm, both of which are hot spots of mobile game development, later this year. In the United States, keep an eye out in Austin, Boston and other regional development hubs, as these may be potential future destinations for the Buzz workshops as well — especially because the largest congregations of indie game developers are more likely to attend where it is most convenient and within reach for them, said McNair.

The goal of the event in San Francisco was to attract 100 attendees, but in the end, the event drew over 140 developer and influencer attendees, according to the organizers. In fact, they said they had to cap the attendees after they more than met their goal.

For 2015 in San Francisco, as one might imagine it would be anywhere else they’d host the event, attendee feedback will drive their decisions for how they organize the following year. Green-lighting a 2015 Buzz event in a given locale largely depends on the nature of the feedback Intel organizers receive. For example, from 2013 to 2014, much of the feedback was about bringing more technical talks to the 2014 event, and they believed they delivered on that request. At the time of the interview, McNair believed they hit their objectives for this year in San Francisco.

The one thing the organizers already are confident that they’d change is the window in which they’d organize and assemble next year’s Intel Buzz Workshop Series for Game Developers event. One of the challenges in organizing an event in San Francisco — the many other events going on at any given time, which also also means there is a ready community of developers, entrepreneurs and media who share these events — helped the organizers bring together a full house in a month. Not an easy feat anywhere else, but they readily agree they’d like a longer window to work with the next time around.

As always, keep your eye peeled for coverage of these developer-focused events on E4G’s calendar and in in our editorial pages!

The Rise of Fangirls at Comic-Con 2014

From Time.com: Why women are flocking to the conference

San Diego Comic-Con—an annual conference celebrating all things gloriously nerdy from The Avengers to Star Trek—has had a reputation as a boys’ club, albeit a geeky one. Many unfamiliar with the event might assume its made up of nerdy boys in Star Wars costumes ogling “booth babes.” But attend this year’s Comic-Con, which began Thursday and runs throughout the weekend, and you can visit a panel on the women of Marvel comics, watch a geek couture fashion show and meet female writers of iconic shows like The Walking Dead.

Long-time attendees, panelists and industry insiders believe that women have always been a fan of genre, but in the last five years they have become more openly vocal about their nerdy tendencies.

“I feel like it’s perceived to be a boys’ club, but I’m not sure it ever really has been,” says Jane Espenson, who will participate in the sci-fi writing panel. Espenson wrote episodes on a wide range of sci-fi and fantasy shows, including Buffy, Game of Thrones and Battlestar Galactica (where she was the only woman in the writer’s room). She is currently a co-creator of the online show Husbands. “There were always a lot of women at those Buffy panels. Even at the Battlestar Gallactica panels because Starbuck was such an iconic female character, you’d see a lot of women showing up in fighter pilot uniforms.”
