Video of the Month — NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang Keynote at COMPUTEX 2023

NVIDIA, the Santa Clara, California-headquartered technology giant, is in a major boom cycle lately. With the superheated hype of artificial intelligence (AI) going forward at full steam, NVIDIA is one of the companies that’s in the forefront of this field of innovation and is fully plugging into it. In fact, thanks in part to AI, NVIDIA’s valuation had, for a while, even reached the rarified air of the corporate “trillion dollar club.”

With that kind of momentum behind the company, its CEO and founder Jensen Huang delivered a keynote at the massive COMPUTEX 2023 expo, which was held from May 30 to June 2, 2023 in Taipei, Taiwan. Huang brought plenty of AI news (and many other updates), including news addressing game visualization technology, one of their core markets.

In this nearly-two hour video on YouTube, along with many other announcements, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GPU was announced as being in mass production, which may be of interest for gamers looking for a more approachable entry point into the 40 Series RTX GPUs. The RTX 4060 Ti GPU starts at a relatively tame $399 MSRP, especially when compared to the very powerful and very expensive flagship GPU, the RTX 4090, with its $1,599 MSRP.

On the software development side, NVIDIA also announced what it calls the NVIDIA Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) for Games. ACE is designed as a customizable AI model creation service for the cloud or hosted on local devices with non-player characters (NPCs) able to communicate with the player via AI large language model (LLM)-powered engagement. To see the demo example, give this link from the video a click and you’ll see how ACE works in action. “AI will be a very big part of the future of video games,” Huang says in summary. As either developers or players, that’s a prediction that may well come true.

After these keynote-leading announcements, numerous other data center and supercomputer-class GPUs and AI and big data-processing announcements were made, including around when to expect the next generation of the Grace Hopper
“superchip,” which is currently in the GH200 iteration and in full production. But what if that’s not enough juice for your needs? That’s when you might consider — wallet permitting — the DGX GH200, which is essentially 144TB of memory shared across 256 NVIDIA Grace Hopper GH200s.

This brief summary, of course, only scratches the surface of this densely-packed keynote address. To dig deeper, you can visit the official video, in whole or in part, that follows!

Events for Gamers Chats with MAGWest

We’ve been covering MAGWest and MAGFest events for years now. MAGWest is a fun festival around the game industry with a heavy emphasis on music. The next event in the series is coming up on July 14-16, 2023 in San Jose, CA USA, so we had to speak to the team on why MAGWest is a great place to jam to the music of the hour while basking in the fun of the videogame industry. Here is what they had to say!

Events for Gamers: What does “MAGWest” mean and who is the event for?

MAGWest: The MAG in MAGWest is short for “Music and Gaming”. It’s an event that celebrates all things videogames with a heavy emphasis on music. When we say music, we mean you can find it on the main stage, the Jamspace, the pool parties, to impromptu performances in the hallway, to hotel rooms. Attendees often bring their instruments prepared to jam at almost any time. It’s hard to explain exactly, but it’s somewhere between a traditional nerdy convention and a music festival, with a lot of participation. If you like listening to or playing music, playing videogames, or even attending an event where something a bit unpredictable can happen, this is the place for you.

How did MAGWest get started and how has it gotten to where it is now?

MAGWest is a spin-off of MAGFest, which began in 2002 in the East Coast. As MAGFest grew they gradually branched out to other events. MAGWest officially started in 2017 as the West Coast equivalent of MAGFest, however as the years have gone on West has developed its own unique identity. As one example, the Pool Party performances started off as a “what if” idea from a staffer, and has become a centerpoint of the event. That’s something you definitely won’t see at MAGFest in DC in January.

What musical guests will be at this year’s show?

We’ve got over a dozen great acts just on the main stage this year including:

  • The Living Tombstone; the massive internet sensations
  • SSJ; a Dragon Ball Z band created by the composer of the American DBZ show
  • Ross Tregenza and Graeme Norgate; two game composers with some impressive credits performing together as a new band

We also have amazing video game music bands such as Super Soul Bros and Extra Lives, rappers and beatmakers like Prowess the Testament and Keifergr33n, the game music DJ GWIZ, and chiptune band Crashfaster, and many others.

Since charity is one of your focuses as a non-profit, how can folks participate? We heard something about a 24-hour charity speedrunning stream…

Unfortunately our charity stream isn’t happening as it usually does, but it should hopefully return in 2024. For anyone interested in participating, like most convention-style events, we encourage people to volunteer. One of the great things about MAGWest is that often if you have an idea and the staff to do it, it can become a reality very quickly which is really the spirit of MAG in a nutshell.

Do you believe speedrunning or marathon races have helped to keep interest in older games going?

Absolutely, MAGFest and MAGWest’s roots are definitely in retrogaming but as the landscape of gaming has changed, people expect different things from them. With Twitch streamers and regular MAGWest guests like Ryukahr and DwangoAC (aka TASBot), groups like AGDQ, randomizer races, Let’s Plays and everything else, it’s given all of us new ways to appreciate the games we grew up playing.

What else can attendees look forward to at MAGWest that’s game industry centric?

MAGWest always has panels from industry professionals talking about their experience in games, whether it’s composers, game devs, voice actors and beyond. This year is no exception, with roundtables with composers like Chase Bethea and Mason Lieberman. We also have an indie game area which is a great way to connect with future game industry professionals.

For students and others looking to get into the game industry, are there any contributor opportunities they can sign up for at the shows?

One of the best ways to contribute is to submit panels or indie games. Even just attending and socializing can be great. While MAGWest is not strictly an industry event, it’s not uncommon to see industry professionals coming just as attendees, so you never know who you’ll see

What are your longer-term plans for MAGWest after this year’s event?

It’s always difficult to speak to concrete future plans in the lead-up to an event but it may help to talk about some of the things we’ve doing differently this year. In previous years most of our content has understandably been on the two main days Friday and Saturday. This year we’re putting more music and panels on Sunday, as well as slightly extending our content hours on Friday and Saturday, and even adding a bit of content for the dedicated attendees coming in on Thursday (aka Day 0). We want people to make the most of their time at the event, especially for those taking time off work and traveling long distances to be here.

Beyond that we just want to keep the spirit of gaming and video game music active throughout the year. We just put on a handful of smaller videogame music concerts in May and June and partnered with some local organizations for promotion, and we hope to continue to do so in the future.

Thanks for the opportunity to chat, and we look forward to seeing you at MAGWest!

AWE Announces Winners of the $100,000 XR Prize Challenge and Auggie Awards

June 2, 2023 – Augmented World Expo 2023, Santa Clara, CA – Augmented World Expo (AWE), the leading series of worldwide events focused exclusively on the business of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) all known collectively as XR, today announced the $100,000 XR Prize Challenge: Fight Climate Change winner after a nearly year-long journey and hundreds of submitted projects from all over the world.

The $100,000 cash prize XR Prize Challenge is a global competition harnessing AR and VR (XR) solutions to help fight climate change, with awards distributed among 11 finalists selected from 21 countries across 5 continents. The finalists pitched at a live session on Tuesday, May 30. It is hosted by AWE, the renowned producer of global in-person and online XR events, and the world’s most impactful XR community. The contest highlights creative, functional, and impactful XR-based solutions to help humanity in our fight against climate change.

The winners of the Challenge are:

  • Best of Category: Optimize – InCitu – inCitu brings future cities to life through Augmented Reality to foster collaboration around the process of urban change
  • Best of Category: Educate – Mangrove City – Mangrove City by University of Miami is a VR experience designed for middle school students to explore the crucial role of mangrove forests in protecting coastal communities and mitigating climate change
  • Best of Category: Visualize – Qikiqtaruk: Arctic at Risk – a project that unites educators, researchers, park rangers, northern community outreach officers, and VR content creators to create a virtual journey to Qikiqtaruk, an island at the forefront of climate change
  • Grand Prize Winner – Between Two Worlds – The Grand Prize winning “Between Two Worlds” Augmented Reality app invites viewers to experience wildlife art as they’ve never seen it before: scanning the endangered animals with your mobile device brings them to life and reveals the myriad threats to not only them, but their habitats as well

Videos, images and more from not only the winning apps but all the finalists may be found at www.awexr.com.

In addition, the acclaimed Auggie Award prizes were announced and distributed at the same event, with innovative winners across multiple categories – full details are also to be found at  https://www.awexr.com/usa-2023/auggie.

“Between Two Worlds demonstrates a beautiful and thoughtful use of interactive AR that links physical artwork to real world impact. It is elegant in its simplicity and has the potential to scale and accelerate learning, donating, and acting towards the protection of biodiverse habitats worldwide: a powerful natural defense against climate change,” noted XR Prize Challenge judge Dr. Erika Woolsey,  Chief Scientist & CEO, The Hydrous.

Dr. Woolsey is a marine biologist, National Geographic Explorer, XR Creator, Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University Virtual Human Interaction Lab, and Chief Scientist & CEO of The Hydrous, a 501c3 non-profit on a mission to create “open access oceans” so that all people may explore, understand, and engage with marine environments, which are severely threatened by climate change and human impacts.

“I’m humbled and inspired by all the creative and diverse solutions proposed in this competition, and proud to be associated with such powerful leaders and voices harnessing XR in our fight against climate change,” noted Dace Campbell, XR Prize Challenge Competition Manager.

The challenge

Climate change is one of the most urgent and long-term threats to life as we know it, and deserves our attention as a species, as professionals, and as technology experts. While the causes and effects of climate change are understood intellectually, they are difficult to grasp viscerally or emotionally because they seem so disconnected from our daily lives and behaviors. One of the biggest challenges in raising awareness of the impacts of climate change is that it is hard to fight a threat you can’t see.

Additionally, while there are communities and communication platforms for those who wish to address climate change, these forums are often not as powerful as immersive solutions for educating people through direct and personal experience. Climate change subject matter experts and entrepreneurs struggle to inspire people and policy-makers to take action. Finally, engineers and other professionals need spatially immersive tools to help improve and optimize design and execution for solutions to fight climate change.

The Augmented World Expo (AWE) returns to Silicon Valley with the latest and greatest in extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) hardware and software innovations. Games, are, of course, a big part of the XR landscape and will be well-represented again at AWE 2023. The main event, so to speak, will be hosted in Santa Clara from May 31 to June 2. But the conference itself isn’t the only game in town.

In keeping with past lists we’ve curated, with one exception, only public events within and adjacent to AWE’s event window (between Wed., May 31 and Fri, June 2) are included. All official parties are added with titles marked in red. If you’d like to further plan around the official conference agenda and parties, take a look at the official AWE 2023 USA agenda summary or the full agenda here.

Have you seen an event posting we should add here, or are you a host of an event you’d like to share with the community? Events for Gamers’ AWE 2023 USA party list may be updated with new events or updated statuses with events until AWE is underway.

June 2023 Game Industry Events Calendar

Happy June Jamboree! WOW! This month is by far the longest list we’ve ever had, by over five events!

June made a big jump in how many events are turning back into purely on-site. We’ve been speaking to event coordinators to get their thoughts on what direction the rest of the year will head for types of events. Most agree that there are benefits in at least a mixed event setup, even if the bulk of the event is, say, an on-site convention.

June also marks the start of events gearing up for the summer time with conventions and festivals dominating the scene!

To give you the power to easily discover upcoming game industry events calendar that includes conferences, conventions, festivals and many other types of events, we post a consolidated list here on Events for Gamers each month.

Video of the Month — Games and the Open Metaverse: Neal Stephenson Keynote at D.I.C.E. Summit 2023

With Snow Crash author Neal Stephenson announced as a speaker at the upcoming Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2023 conference, this seemed like the right occasion to take a look back at another recent occasion where the influential science fiction writer and metaverse blockchain co-founder had spoken.

At the D.I.C.E. Summit this last February, Neal Stephenson was the opening keynote. In the 20 minute-long video, Stephenson discusses the socially consciousness and technological underpinnings behind Lamina1, the metaverse-focused blockchain network he’s helping to build.

In the video, he also acknowledges the wariness of some game developers to the “financialization” of games through blockchain, Web3, NFT and some of the other issues shaping perception in and around the volatile crypto world. But, because of the success of many games, like World of Warcraft and EVE Online (with their in-game currencies and economies) Stephenson is fundamentally bullish on game currencies that have meaningful value — a concept that he believes that can translate to the metaverse.

Watch the video to check out Neal Stephenson’s perspective in full.

Snow Crash Author Neal Stephenson to Speak at AWE 2023

In science fiction, technologist, and futurism circles, author Neal Stephenson is someone akin to a prophet. In his influential 1992 novel, Snow Crash, Stephenson predicted the metaverse (heck, even coining the term), avatars, cryptocurrencies and some socio-political trends as well. Recently, Stephenson partnered with Bitcoin Foundation co-founder and venture capitalist Stephenson to build a blockchain, Lamina1, intended to help create the “fabric of the open metaverse.”

Given his background, both as an author about the metaverse and now helping to build its foundation, it makes perfect sense why Neal Stephenson is keynoting at the upcoming Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2023. AWE 2023 focuses on extended reality (XR), which includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), the metaverse, haptics and other overlapping technologies helping to underwrite the growth of XR.

Neal Stephenson joins about four hundred speakers, who include:

  • Peggy Johnson, CEO, Magic Leap
  • John Riccitiello, CEO, Unity Technologies
  • Hugo Swart, VP & GM, XR, Qualcomm
  • Chi Xu, CEO, Nreal
  • Shelley Peterson, Director – Principal Program Manager, Microsoft

AWE 2023 will take place May 31st to June 2nd in Santa Clara, CA. AWE 2023 organizers expect over 5,000 attendees as well as 300 global exhibitors to participate. Check out the AWE 2023 website for more information about the agenda, registration, and more.

Where Games and Security Connect at RSA Conference 2023

Like a Call of Duty player camped and waiting to snipe a vulnerable opponent, the game industry is one of the more vulnerable targets to cybersecurity hacking. The video game industry and its community is also one of the bigger targets.

According to Grand View Research, the global video game market size was valued at $195.65 billion in 2021, and from 2022 to 2030, it’s expected to continue growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of a robust 12.9%. Akamai Technologies issued a report in August 2022 that showed that games companies had more than doubled over the course of just one year, from 2021 to 2022.

Enter the RSA Conference (RSAC) 2023, which focuses on the world of cybersecurity, is taking place in San Francisco from April 24-27. Video games-related topics are included in the selection of hundreds of sessions that an attendee can pick from. Here’s a sampling of some of the sessions that game developers and professionals (who happen to be gamers) may find insightful at the RSAC show:

Engaging with metaverses and other virtual worlds requires a measure of security awareness and caution (cc0 Image: Soumil Kumar/Pexels)

Metaverse:

Metaverse worlds have been rolling out for a few years now and continue to be launched. But it’s early days for this emerging segment of online gaming worlds, so fraudsters, hackers, and other malicious actors may well be lurking in these worlds. What kind of threats are emerging and what kind of strategies might be able to deter adversarial attacks in metaverses built on avatars and manufactured identities, often attached to mercurial crypto, Web3, NFTs, and blockchain networks?

The Lunacy of Web3
Dr. Tracy Celaya Brown, Iron Mountain Data Centers (Speaker)
Ira Winkler, CYE Security (Speaker)

Look Far Afield: Metaverse Security Secrets from the Gaming Industry

Metaverse: Top Security & Privacy Concerns
Winn Schwartau, SchwartauHaus, LLC (Speaker)

Gamification:
“Gamification” is a term for engagement mechanics that’s been around for many years. While it may be be sometimes overused, in cybersecurity it’s an actively useful concept that can help teach cybersecurity, enhance skills, and bring in and train new talent. Discussing how games, game mechanics, and game theory, can create and improve an organization’s cybersecurity is the objective of the session.

Cloud Threat Gamification: Lessons Learned and How to Set One Up
Jon-Michael Brook, Starbucks (Speaker)
Randall Brooks, Raytheon Technologies (Speaker)

Want to Play a Game? Get Your Game On with Hacking Gamification
Joseph Carson, Delinea (Speaker)

Beyond these sessions, there are a number of tabletop exercises; red, purple, and blue team simulations, and sandboxing that take place during RSAC 2023 as well, which can give some attendees an idea how simulations and “gamification” of security exercises take place.

May 2023 Game Industry Events Calendar

Happy May Mashup! This month we have an interesting series of events from conferences to conventions, and even several one-day gatherings. Don’t miss these one-day meetups if you’re in the area!

May has stabilized on how many events are turning back into purely on-site. We’ve been speaking to event coordinators to get their thoughts on what direction the rest of the year will head for types of events. Most agree that there are benefits in at least a mixed event setup, even if the bulk of the event is, say, an on-site convention.

To give you the power to easily discover upcoming game industry events calendar that includes conferences, conventions, festivals and many other types of events, we post a consolidated list here on Events for Gamers each month.
